NOTE: In using the following course materials, you will need to follow the course calendar – especially for the two Complete Adventure books. Like the Dinosaur Activity Book, they are included to provide learning activities and additional material that enhance the study of the World of Animals. When referencing the activity pages on the PLP course calendar after the devotionals in the Complete Adventure books have been read, it gives a page range – as always, flexibility is given for you to choose as many or as few of these activities you would like your young learner to do. You can make as many copies of these as you may need.
While the calendar doesn't use all the material in the Complete Adventure books, you can use the additional reading material as additional learning or reading opportunities for your child. And you can also choose to use some of these activities on the days when the course calendar doesn't have activities or reading already specified. The material can also be enjoyed by younger or older students as well if you are planning a family trip to a local zoo or aquarium.

Fantastic Science Curriculum Review by Missica
What did you think of this book?
We have had the amazing opportunity to review the Elementary Zoology Curriculum Set for Masterbooks.com. This set, geared for the 3rd to 6th grade levels, includes a weekly lesson schedule, consumable student worksheets and workbook, tests, quizzes, and an answer key. This set will fulfill 1 year of science for your homeschooler.
This set includes:
The World of Animals
Dinosaur Activity Book
The Complete Aquarium Adventure
The Complete Zoo Adventure
Parent Lesson Planner (PLP)
How We Used This:
We chose to follow the schedule in the Parent Lesson Planner for this course. The lessons are short in duration, but they pack in a lot of fun information. The activities do not take a huge amount of time, so it was easy to work it in every other day. In addition to our daily work, we took a trip to the zoo and aquarium as icing on the cake!
The World of Animals: This is a FANTASTIC book! The pages are so very colorful and with detailed photos. Mr. B enjoys reading this for fun, in the car, at the doctor, everywhere! The front cover features a Tiger that moves as you move the cover back and forth (I love those types of photos pictures!) This is a large, hardcover book, at 8.5"x11.75" It covers the habitat and lives of over 1000 animals in 256 pages. It features fantastic photos, informational text, facts, and comparison. the flow is great, and it just makes sense. Starting out with small, little microscopic animals and moving up to the larger mammals. (HINT: Click the link to see a PDF sample of each book featured!)
The Complete Aquarium Adventure: This is a field trip in a book! (And the cover even says so! ) This book is jam packed with goodies! There are information cards for animals and the ocean, pictures, BingOcean cards (lots of fun!!!) and activities. This is a fantastic resource to use when going to the aquarium, but not everyone has the ability to go to a real aquarium (or aquarium like place such as a marine life park or the beach) so this book is written in such a way that it brings the aquarium to you! So while it is great to use if you're going to the aquarium, it is perfectly acceptable to use it at home on your own, too. You won't be lacking either way!
The Complete Zoo Adventure: Like the Complete Aquarium Adventure, this is a Zoo in a Book! It's great to use if you're blessed to go to the zoo, but it's great to use if you aren't able to get there, as well. We actually used this BEFORE we went to the zoo and aquarium, which augmented our experience at the zoo. And we will use it again before we go back next week! I love the activity pages and the Zoo journal. We have gone to the zoo several times before, but having this book makes the experience so much better! We were able to read up on the animals beforehand, see facts and such, and this led to a greater excitement when we finally got to see them! The included Field Fact Cards are probably my favorites! I like to randomly pick out a few and if we spot those animals we win a "prize" which is usually an ice cream or a tiny figurine of the animal from the gift shop!
The Dinosaur Activity Book: Ok...I'll admit it. I thought this was "just a coloring book." I was wrong! SOOOOO very wrong! This IS a coloring book, but it also has a variety of activities and loads of information on each page! The scenes to color are GREAT! Mr. B isn't that into dinosaurs or coloring, yet he LOVES to do this book! This is such a wonderful asset to this set! I'm thrilled it is included! It teaches more than just dinosaurs. It covers fossils, fossil formation and recontruction, etc.
Parent Lesson Planner: The parent lesson planner is your information hub. It includes the daily schedule, consumable worksheets, quizzes, tests, and the answer key. I used the Parent Lesson Planner daily. Each day I would put an check in the box for that day's lesson to mark it complete. Sometimes Mr. B would do the honors of marking the check box complete! I find these PLPs very handy and useful. I love how the lessons are planned in such a way that we have the ultimate flexibility in choosing our scheduling. Each week has 5 days in the week, but you can opt to do the lessons in whatever manner you wish to choose. This works well for us since we need flexibility. The included bonus activities are great! For example, your child can be tasked with writing a one page paper on a chosen animal, discuss if frogs are in your area, drawing pictures of animals, setting up ant farms, etc. Lots of fun activities are included here.
Overall, Masterbooks.com has outdone themselves again with Elementary Zoology. This is a Christian based science program, but it is not preachy or lacking in any way. I'm admittedly hesitant when it comes to religious based science curriculum because I know Mr. B wants to go to college, and as such he is going to need a varied background in science for that reason. Other religion based programs we have tired in the past were lacking in multiple ways, such as neglecting to mention Galileo invented his telescope on purpose, instead they said "some man" happened upon two pieces of glass as if it was all an accident. As a result, I've preferred to teach him the religious principles myself along with a secular science. With that said, I would use Masterbooks.com Elementary Zoology over and over again! It is based on a Christian perspective, but it is not preachy or lacking in science fundamentals at all. This is a well planned, well written comprehensive course that does not leave anything out. The age range is great! It is challenging for Mr. B who is 10, but written in such a way that a 3rd grader (8yrs old or so) could complete the activities-perhaps with a bit of help with the reading. There is a moderate amount of reading to be done at times-like reading pages 16-19 in The World of Animals book, but the amazing photos and fun content make the reading easy. Mr. B reads it for FUN! He loves it! You can easily change the schedule as needed to fit your lifestyle and needs. This curriculum set is a very affordable science curriculum that covers a full year of science in a wonderful manner!
Does Masterbooks.com Elementary Zoology Pass My 4 Ingredient Test?
1.) Customization: Is it easily adaptable? Can we customize it to fit “us?” Can we modify or set our own schedule? Can we take breaks, jump ahead, or flat out skip?
YES! The schedule is made in such a way that you can very easily customize it to fit you. Each unit is marked, so if you want to jump a unit you can, but I suggest working through according to the PLP for greater ease and understanding. You can take breaks if needed. I wouldn't advise skipping just because the information is so great and activities are great, too.
2.) Value: Is it long lasting? Will it cover multiple grade ranges? Are you locked in to one specific grade level? Are there hidden fees?
This is a physical product that includes everything you need for the full year. There are NO hidden fees. The published grade range is 3rd-6th. I could even see some 7th graders using this! So you can use this with multi ages with ease, though younger grades may need a bit of assistance and modification. The Complete Zoo Book and The Complete Aquarium Book suggest photocopying field trip pages to use again and again.
3.) Attention span: Is it boring? Is it engaging? Is it varied enough for ADHD? Does it last too long?
This is NOT boring. Mr. B doesn't love reading, but he loves this reading. He reads The World of Animals all the time, constantly bringing it to me to tell me what he's learned next. The activities are not time consuming, and can be finished in 10-15 minutes. The Dinosaur Activity Book is fun with coloring, dot-to-dot, etc. intertwined with educational text. The Zoo and Aquarium books are full of fun learning that will keep your child attentive and engaged. I find this perfect for Autism and ADHD due to the amazing photos and flow of text and activities.
4.) Does it tie into other things we already have.
You can find ways to tie this in with other subjects, but this is only a science curriculum from a Christian perspective. It does not include history or grammar lessons, or anything like that. It is a full, stand alone, science curriculum that blends and flows wonderfully with the Masterbooks.com Elementary World History You Report! we are already using.

A full curriculum in Zoology- vibrant books open the student to a new world of animals, with educator resources to prepare a quality program. Review by Patricia
What did you think of this book?
World of Animals
World of Animals - Fascinating facts about the world of animals published by Master Books, is a fully illustrated, exhaustive fact filled book of Animals for students. The quality presentation of this book rivals that of many popular science themed books for children. From the cover that features a holographic image of a tiger that changes when you reposition the angle of the book, to the graphics, photos and text- this book is sure to capture the attention of any young reader interested in science and animals.
The beginning of the book features an introduction about the oprigin of animals in general, based on the biblical creation account of genesis. The book is further divided by chapters based on the complexity of the organism and animal, starting with simple animals in chapter one which features a surprising and diverse array of both well known and lesser known unique creatures. Even though this book is intended for students and children in general, I found many chapters of this book very informative and thorough. The format and layout of the book presents the animal kingdom in such a way as to give the larger picture to the reader. Animals are not listed in a haphazard alphabetical format which makes no scientifc fact, but rather they are organised based on complexity, species and habitat. I don't think a better presentation or arrangement could be made.
The title in of itself is rather broad- including a variety of animals grouped by species. This book, although not a scholary text book, provides a well rounded background for Animals- superior to that of a text book. The superior organization and presentation of this book of animals rivals the quality of any animal encyclopedia. Basically no living creature is left out, from the floating portists, mosss and fungi to the antelope and elephant. Presenting science and the study of animal life in such an appealing format makes is more obtainable for students in general. The format and presentation of this book makes the study of animals comprehensive. As a blogger for New Leaf publishers Moms of Master Books program I received this book, published by Master Books for the purpose of writing this review.
Dinosaur Activity Book
This book was an unexpected surprise as it not only is an educational resource on dinosaurs but an activity and coloring book as well. I believe any young fan of dinosaurs will enjoy reading about dinosaurs as well as coloring pictures. The art is detailed- and much more than simple cartoon art. The detailed images will hold the attention of older children who want an outlet for creativity as well as younger readers. In fact my teenager snatched this book up and wasted no time in finding some pages to color. Not only is this book a great resource about dinosaurs, it is consistent with biblical creation as well. What a wonderful outreach method of sharing the gospel message to younger readers in the context of an engaging activity book on dinosaurs. As a blogger for Moms of Master Books I recived a copy of this book for the purpose of writing this review.
The Complete Aquarium Adventure
The Complete Aquarium Adventure by Merilee & Bill Clifton, is literally a "A field trip in a book" as declared on the front cover. This spiral bound, interactive full color book has color coded tab divided chapters for each animal category including birds and fish as well as a hands on tool kit, containing fact cards, and even bingo cards for the readers/ participants. This book is educational as well as interactive. This book is the perfect guide to transform any summer trip into an educational field trip. And for those readers who are not actually going to an aquarium, , this book is the next best thing.
This book makes the perfect summer time reading- great for the those interested in marine science and ocean life. In our school we have a special marine themed week. This book would have been the perfect resource my my grades schooler. This is a bold book, and the authors are not ashamed of the gospel message and find effective ways to promote the gospel in of all places- a book going on an aquarium adventure! The photos are sharp and vibrant- this book is beautiful! As a blogger for New Leaf creations I received a copy of this book published by Master Books for the purpose of writing this review. I wish this book would be available to the mass market in book stores everywhere as its message is essential. This publishing company produces many great books that tie in science with biblical creation so that the readers get the whole picture.
The Complete Zoo Adventure
The Complete Zoo Adventure by Mary & Gary Parker, is literally a "A field trip in a book" as marketed on the front cover. This spiral bound, interactive full color book has color coded tab divided chapters for each animal category as well as a hands on tool kit, containing field fact cards, biome cards, field journal cards and name badges for the readers/ participants. This book is educational as well as interactive. This book is the perfect guid to transform any zoo trip into an educational field trip. And for those readers who are not actually going to the real zoo, this book is the next best thing.
At first glance this might seem just like a very good resource in animals and the zoo. But when you actually read the text of the book and not just the full color photographs of animals, the reader will find it is actually an educational book on biblical creation. Sadly, so many readers- and parents who read this book, will probably will look at the photos and stop there. But the actual text of this book is even more impressive! In the section "Before the zoo", there are "devotional" pages which give the biblical background of creation starting from Genesis. This book provides a simple, yet very well written background on the theology of creation and sin, the garden of Eden, and the flood. Issues of creationism vs evolutionary theories are discussed. Furthermore, within the text of the animal sections themselves, the authors do not hesitate to include biblical based commentary. For example, when commenting on a monkey exhibit at a zoo, they critique the fact that a diagram was depicted which implied than men evolved from apes. This is a bold book, and the authors are not ashamed of the gosepl message and find effective ways to promote the gospel in of all places- a book about zoo animals! As a blogger for New Leaf creations I recieved a copy of this book published by Master Books for the purpose of writing this review. I wish this book would be available to the mass market in book stores everywhere as its message is essential. This publishing company produces many great books that tie in science with biblical creation so that the readers get the whole picture.
