As an artist, I despise cut and paste art projects. They have their place, but when the whole of a child's art education is learning to cut out someone else's pictures... well that's not really teaching them any useful skills. Yet many programs I've looked at are either asking way too much for the child's age, or teach them very little about foundational art skills. Not so here. The author covers lines, basic shapes and how to use them, the color wheel, warm and cool colors, and more. For an artistically inclined child, it's a bit easy for first grade. My daughter could have easily done it in kindergarten or even preschool, but there's also nothing wrong with easy. My daughter loves it all the same. She's just flying through it faster is all.
I think the majority of first graders I have had the opportunity to spend time with will probably benefit from this course, I did however find that it was much too easy for my first grader.
My older child would likely have liked it, this one however seems to enjoy the bible connections to art concepts more than she actually learns something she doesn't know or can't do. If you are looking for a curriculum for a child with not too much confidence in art this might be a good option, while a child with a keen interest in art loving to do all sorts of artistic projects in their free time might be underwhelmed and need more.
My daughter as an example would have loved this course in Kindergarten while I think my son would have been fine with it in first grade
The course is set up for 2 short lessons each week. They’re definitely kid-friendly, both in content and in length. The supplies are things most homeschool families have on hand, or they’re inexpensive and easy to obtain. The lessons are fun and simple. The activities encourage creativity. I also really like that she makes things like using a smock or apron and placing a table cloth or mat down part of the instructions. I think it helps kids develop good habits.
Overall, I think this is one of the courses that will be memorable for my kids. I’m thankful for an art introduction course that is focused on worshiping the Creator rather than creation.
Well, worry no more because Master Books has got you covered! This Art Level 1 is perfect for kids around the 5-9 age- incorporating fine motor skills, scripture and art projects as well as great tips and tricks that will help set up your child for future artistic pursuits.
The best part is that it’s only two days a week and if you are hesitant to do even that, go ahead and spread it over two years, once a week. If you have an art loving child this can also easily be done over a long summer break so boredom will be held at bay.
Definitely grab one of these as soon as you can!
I do like all the Biblical references. I love the rainbow that Noah saw and they make their own with small pieces of paper and Josephs coat they work with strips of paper.
I do recommend this book for early elementary. (K-2) Some pre-k can do some of the activities and it is good for someone in older grades with delays.
