The story of Bombus the Bumblebee begins shortly after creation with Bombus busily buzzing between flowers lapping up nectar. The honeybees are slightly perturbed by Bombus bumping into them and beating them to the best flowers. Devising a plan to get Bombus to stop, they tell him that he's just too bulky to be flying and that he would be better suited to being on the ground crawling.

Bombus looks at all the other flying bugs and decides that perhaps they're right, so he stops flying and starts crawling. Then God shows up and corrects Bombus saying, "what did I tell you to do? Fly! So fly." The book concludes with some facts about bumblebees, most notably that their wings should not be able to support their bodies in flight, yet they do. There are also some bumblebee activities for children in the back.

This good-values storybook includes:

  • Parent/Teacher Activity Guide
  • Fascinating Science Facts

“This book held both mine and my children's attention and we all enjoyed it. I liked being able to teach them more about bumblebees without them knowing they were being 'schooled'. As a homeschooler, I can easily turn this into a fun unit study for all my children, since even my 9 year old liked listening in on the story.” — Sarah ★★★★★

“This was such a cute little book. I read it to my 7-year-old son and my 5-year-old daughter and they both really enjoyed it. Both of them stayed captivated by the book." — Amber ★★★★★

Great lesson
Review by Hope Academy
It can be so easy for children and adults to listen to the critiques of others and change to accommodate the image other people expect from us. In this sweet book Bumbus learns to trust what God wants him to do. This book has a great lesson for children to think about what God expects of them.
Family favorite
Review by Jessica
Bombus quickly became a family favorite in our household. I would not hesitate to add it to your library as well.
Great early reader
Review by Mayrla
I got this one in a set for early reader and it sure fit its purpose. Beautifully illustrated and very engaging. Just read others review before reading it, I am adapting as well. It goes a bit in confusing lane.
Inspiration book for kids
Review by Christina
Bombus The Bumblebee is a charming book with beautiful illustrations that uses the story of Bombus, a bumblebee who thinks that because others tell him his body is not designed to fly - that he cannot fly. However, God speaks to Bombus and tells him that he created him to fly and he just needs to obey and he will fly. It is a powerful message and has been beautifully illustrated and written to explain that God loves and cares and He has created us for a purpose and He will accomplish that purpose if we do what He tells us. The book ends with many fun facts and could be used as an introduction to the study of bees for young children.
Great message, but...
Review by Theresa
The message of the book is great: God created you to be perfectly you, so don’t compare yourself to others. Bombus the Bumblebee overcomes bullying by hearing God, and embraces the unique way God created him.

I also like how the book ends with cool facts about bumblebees, and discussion questions and activities.

However, I don’t love the book for young kids. Bombus experiences a lot of shame about who he is (even before the bullying begins), and then the bullying honeybees are super mean. The story is also set very clearly on the new earth (before sin); which, as a Creationist, poses a theological issue for our family since the characters react in a post-sin manner of negative thoughts and actions.

While there are some good things about this book, I will skip reading it to my kids.
I Want to Give This a Five
Review by Julie
I loved this story and really want to give it a five star rating but cannot do it. Why are insects being mean in the beginning? Is this before the fall? If so, there was no meanness. If that one point was changed, I would give all five stars. The story is wonderful. The pictures are engaging.
Excellent! Colorful! Engaging!

My child loved this book, and I especially liked the extra activities in the back. Great touch to really engage the kids!
I did, however, take one reviewers advice and set the story to the earth after the fall.
