Chemistry is the study of the composition, structure, and properties of matter. It is through an understanding of chemistry that the products that have benefited society were discovered, and technologies to sustain the environment were put in place. Knowledge of how matter changes will give us an insight into the origin of life, so we can realize that life could only have been formed by a supernatural act of creation, not by a process of change over time.

  • High school science course with lab curriculum
  • Lab experiments are included with guidance on where to order the lab equipment and supplies needed for the course
  • Based on the principle that those who can understand and apply information do much better than those who simply memorize material

This course has been taught by Dr. Englin for several years, with students going on to medical and graduate school. He wanted to develop a series of courses that would give students the tools to help them succeed in higher education. The comprehensive material has God the Creator as its foundation.

Endorsements

The author makes studying chemistry seem more practical by his references to chemicals in everyday life and powerfully reminds students that the order revealed comes from our Creator God.

Succinct, yet informative
Review by C Forte
As a biomedical engineer, I love to teach my kids the sciences. Chemistry is one of my favorite sciences! This book has succinct lessons that do not drone on and on, but are very informative. The visuals included in the textbook are engaging and add a lot to the text information given. The mathematics are shown in great detail, making the problems easier. The experiments are very approachable and use things easily obtained. I really like this text as an introduction to chemistry!
Chemistry from a Biblical perspective
Review by SB
I am thankful for this Chemistry curriculum and for the way that it is taught with a Biblical worldview. The author, Dr. Dennis Englin states, ”We do not use chemistry to study God but we can see evidence of God in chemistry.” The textbook contains 28 chapters, with 28 labs. The lessons are taught in a straightforward way and not overcomplicated. The colorful pages, helpful photographs, charts, models and diagrams all make the text more student friendly. The labs are laid out in a way that is easy to follow. I appreciate that practical applications are taught. For example, the final lab is about soil testing and has the students determine if the soil needs to be modified and how they should condition it. This is a practical skill that will serve the students well if they plan to do any gardening in the future. The back of the book contains several helpful items: an overview of practical laboratory methods, information about Christian chemists, and a glossary and index.
The Chemistry Teacher Guide is an essential and helpful part of this chemistry course. It provides a detailed explanation of how to grade the course, as well as a daily plan to complete the course in 36 weeks (180 days). The plan for each week follows a similar pattern: read the chapter and complete the chapter worksheet, study the vocabulary words, review and take the chapter quiz, complete the lab, write a lab report. After about 4 chapters (4 weeks) the students spend a week reviewing and then take an exam.
The Teacher Guide also includes the worksheets for each week, instructions for the labs, pages to write the lab reports on, 28 quizzes and 8 exams, and the answer key. It also includes helpful things like a grading chart and a master supply list.
Engaging
Review by Samantha
What an incredible way to learn chemistry! The Christian world view, along with short lessons, tons of graphics and depictions are wonderful and help make it easy to understand! It is engaging and has lots of hands on experience with a lab after every lesson and the periodic review helps retain the knowledge that is being learned.
Great course
Review by Dustie
Chemistry is one of those subjects that tends to intimidate people. This course is a pleasant surprise. I really like that this course has shorter lessons that allow this complex subject to be digested in bite-sized chunks.
The course is well-organized. Expect to spend an hour or so each day, five days per week on this course. It is definitely a high school level course, heavier than lower levels. Each week there are reading assignments, worksheets, a quiz, and a lab. Every 3 or 4 weeks there is a test to ensure the student is mastering the concepts. I like this design, since the concepts build on one another.
The teacher guide is consistent with other MasterBooks courses. It has the schedule, course objectives, worksheets, quizzes, exams, and answer key. I appreciate that there is a sample lab report for reference. A grade sheet is included, also.
I am so thankful that there is a Master Books Academy course to go along with it.
Overall, it is great to have a creation-based chemistry course that helps prepare the high school student for a college chemistry course and gives them a greater appreciation for the created world.
Excellent and well written
Review by Kristy
My two older boys are doing the Chemistry course currently. It is so well written and explains everything in great detail. They had no clue how much chemistry is involved in every day life. There are vocabulary words for each chapter. The pictures are very well done. At the end of each chapter is a lab. The labs are easy enough to do at home yourself. We added the Academy course and do the labs that way. It is a hard course but I believe it's necessary and every student should take this course. It's very similar to the biology course.
Biblical perspective

We appreciate science from a Biblical perspective.
We did this Chemstry curriculum with a homeschool co-op, did weekly labs together
Review by Enough content without being cumbersome
This was the perfect high school aged intro to chemistry with enough content and math to learn and also whet appetite for students who may want to go deeper with chemistry. I did this curriculum for a class of about 20 kids of varying levels and it was accessible to all of them. I liked the format of weekly labs and was able to adapt them to a group setting each week to have more fun together.
Great curriculum!
Review by Crystal
The Chemistry student text is very approachable for the student. The lessons are brief and there are lots of pictures and examples included. I like how the course tries to engage students with different learning styles. Each lesson lasts one week and includes reading from the text, completing a worksheet, learning the vocabulary, completing a lab, and completing a lab report. Through various learning activities, the understanding of the concepts are reinforced and tested. MB has developed a great 5 day schedule of activities, but there are opportunities to do the work in 3 or 4 days per week, making this curriculum flexible for busy families.
Brilliant
Review by Lexie
We decided to use this Masterbooks course for our daughter's chemistry high school credit. The course is divided up so that you cover one chapter per week and do an experiment along with it. It was somewhat surprising to see that the quizzes are suggested for day 3 of a 5 day week with the experiments following on days 4-5, but we are giving it a try. The chapters aren't too long or overwhelming so I believe we will stick with the schedule long term. The lessons are somewhat shorter so my daughter is doing well with them, whereas a long, drawn out chapter would easily bring on frustration for her. The teachers guide contains worksheets, lab reports, quizzes, tests, and answers to all of those. I love this concept about Masterbooks as not having an additional answer key to spend money on is greatly appreciated. The textbook itself is very colorful and inviting, drawing the reader in with wonderful pictures and presenting information from a very Christ centered perspective. The text and information presented is very upper level so I highly suggest using this during a junior or senior year in high school.
Great Chemistry Course
Review by Lacee C
Dr. Englin’s Master Class Chemistry is 28 chapters taking the student through the composition, structure, and properties of matter. I love that each science curriculum by Master Books works to not only point the student to our Creator, but also to apply concepts to real life. Students will do worksheets, lab work, quizzes and exams throughout the course, found in the Teacher’s Guide. Algebra I is a prerequisite so this course is better suited to 10th grade and above. Master Books sells a Chemistry kit to go alongside this curriculum and it is needed to do the experiments. You could piece it together on your own, but ultimately it would cost you more unless you already have a significant amount of the supplies. You will definitely want all three components: the student text book, the teacher guide and the lab kit. Each chapter has a lab, done on day four of the week. Every three or four chapters there is a review week before an exam; exams are helpful because Chemistry is a course where concepts continue to build upon each other. While this is definitely a high school level course, I appreciate how easy the text is to follow and understand.
