Chemistry is the study of the composition, structure, and properties of matter. It is through an understanding of chemistry that the products that have benefited society were discovered, and technologies to sustain the environment were put in place. Knowledge of how matter changes will give us an insight into the origin of life, so we can realize that life could only have been formed by a supernatural act of creation, not by a process of change over time.

  • High school science course with lab curriculum
  • Lab experiments are included with guidance on where to order the lab equipment and supplies needed for the course
  • Based on the principle that those who can understand and apply information do much better than those who simply memorize material

This course has been taught by Dr. Englin for several years, with students going on to medical and graduate school. He wanted to develop a series of courses that would give students the tools to help them succeed in higher education. The comprehensive material has God the Creator as its foundation. Algebra I is a recommended prerequisite for this Chemistry course.

This is a one-year course with two full semesters, helping the student fulfill one credit of chemistry, which includes the lab. High school transcripts will list the course as Chemistry with Labs.

Chemistry from a Biblical Perspective
Review by SB
I am thankful for this Chemistry curriculum and for the way that it is taught with a Biblical worldview. The author, Dr. Dennis Englin states ,”We do not use chemistry to study God but we can see evidence of God in chemistry.” The textbook contains 28 chapters, with 28 labs. The lessons are taught in a straightforward way and not overcomplicated. The colorful pages, helpful photographs, charts, models and diagrams all make the text more student friendly. The labs are laid out in a way that is easy to follow. I appreciate that practical applications are taught. For example, the final lab is about soil testing and has the students determine if the soil needs to be modified and how they should condition it. This is a practical skill that will serve the students well if they plan to do any gardening in the future. The back of the book contains several helpful items: an overview of practical laboratory methods, information about Christian chemists, and a glossary and index.
The Chemistry Teacher Guide is an essential and helpful part of this chemistry course. It provides a detailed explanation of how to grade the course, as well as a daily plan to complete the course in 36 weeks (180 days). The plan for each week follows a similar pattern: read the chapter and complete the chapter worksheet, study the vocabulary words, review and take the chapter quiz, complete the lab, write a lab report. After about 4 chapters (4 weeks) the students spend a week reviewing and then take an exam.
The Teacher Guide also includes the worksheets for each week, instructions for the labs, pages to write the lab reports on, 28 quizzes and 8 exams, and the answer key. It also includes helpful things like a grading chart and a master supply list.
Engaging
Review by Samantha
What an incredible way to learn chemistry! The Christian world view, along with short lessons, tons of graphics and depictions are wonderful and help make it easy to understand! It is engaging and has lots of hands on experience with a lab after every lesson and the periodic review helps retain the knowledge that is being learned.
Great course
Review by Dustie
Chemistry is one of those subjects that tends to intimidate people. This course is a pleasant surprise. I really like that this course has shorter lessons that allow this complex subject to be digested in bite-sized chunks.
The course is well-organized. Expect to spend an hour or so each day, five days per week on this course. It is definitely a high school level course, heavier than lower levels. Each week there are reading assignments, worksheets, a quiz, and a lab. Every 3 or 4 weeks there is a test to ensure the student is mastering the concepts. I like this design, since the concepts build on one another.
The teacher guide is consistent with other MasterBooks courses. It has the schedule, course objectives, worksheets, quizzes, exams, and answer key. I appreciate that there is a sample lab report for reference. A grade sheet is included, also.
I am so thankful that there is a Master Books Academy course to go along with it.
Overall, it is great to have a creation-based chemistry course that helps prepare the high school student for a college chemistry course and gives them a greater appreciation for the created world.
Not a good book
Review by Jill
I teach science in a co-op setting. This is one of the most poorly written textbooks we've used. We were hoping for something a little easier than one of the major textbook publishers in Christian homeschool science, but this one is so poorly written, I can't imagine my students gaining a true understanding of chemistry after taking this class with this book as-is. Significantly important concepts are either left out or barely touched on, other concepts are taught incorrectly, and there are several chapters in which the homework asks questions from future chapters, not the current one. I wish the publisher had an actual chemist or professor of chemistry to write or at least edit this textbook (rather than non-PhD teacher of biology at a Christian college for non-science majors). I basically spent all summer rewriting the textbook so that students could gain a deep knowledge of chemistry and not be overwhelmed by information that is not taught well. I am sorry that I had my class buy this book, and we will not be using Master Books in the future.
Chemistry

My son and I are enjoying this Chemistry class along with the lab. The lessons along with the explanations and pictures to show the ab work are really helpful. We are also watching the videos from the academy and it is extremely helpful. It helps make the lessons make sense for those that aren't super great at Chemistry. We can pause them and work along with him step by step. Thank you for making what was once a dreaded subject for me to teach much more enjoyable and easier!
Love it!

We are taking the Academy class and it is wonderful. Used the biology last year so had to continue. It is so helpful to have an instructor that knows the subject makes my life much easier. We aren't looking for a science major type class and the information is just enough right. We are off to another great start. Thank you so very much for providing the academy classes to help with more complex subjects.
Excellent Chemistry Curriculum!
Review by SarahT
This text has short lessons that aid students understanding of the topics! This is high-quality chemistry education grounded in a biblical perspective with lots of hands-on opportunities for learning. I would highly recommend using this curriculum along side the Master Books Academy Chemistry class!
Great curriculum!
Review by Crystal
The Chemistry student text is very approachable for the student. The lessons are brief and there are lots of pictures and examples included. I like how the course tries to engage students with different learning styles. Each lesson lasts one week and includes reading from the text, completing a worksheet, learning the vocabulary, completing a lab, and completing a lab report. Through various learning activities, the understanding of the concepts are reinforced and tested. MB has developed a great 5 day schedule of activities, but there are opportunities to do the work in 3 or 4 days per week, making this curriculum flexible for busy families.

The teacher guide is a necessary and helpful companion to the Chemistry course. It includes all the worksheets, quizzes, tests, lab worksheets, and answer keys. In addition, there are helpful hints, instructions on how to use and grade the course, and the suggested daily guide. I enjoy how simply MB lays everything out for both the student and the parent.
Love it so far!

We decided to use this Masterbooks course for our daughter's chemistry high school credit. The course is divided up so that you cover one chapter per week and do an experiment along with it. It was somewhat surprising to see that the quizzes are suggested for day 3 of a 5 day week with the experiments following on days 4-5, but we are giving it a try. The chapters aren't too long or overwhelming so I believe we will stick with the schedule long term. The lessons are somewhat shorter so my daughter is doing well with them, whereas a long, drawn out chapter would easily bring on frustration for her. The teachers guide contains worksheets, lab reports, quizzes, tests, and answers to all of those. I love this concept about Masterbooks as not having an additional answer key to spend money on is greatly appreciated. The textbook itself is very colorful and inviting, drawing the reader in with wonderful pictures and presenting information from a very Christ centered perspective. The text and information presented is very upper level so I highly suggest using this during a junior or senior year in high school.
Great Chemistry Course
Review by Lacee C
Dr. Englin’s Master Class Chemistry is 28 chapters taking the student though the composition, structure, and properties of matter. I love that each science curriculum by Master Books works to not only point the student to our Creator, but also to apply concepts to real life. Students will will do worksheets, lab work, quizzes and exams throughout the course, found in the Teacher’s Guide. Algebra I is a prerequisite so this course is better suited to 10th grade and above. Master Books sells a Chemistry kit to go alongside this curriculum and it is needed to do the experiments. You could piece it together on your own, but ultimately it would cost you more unless you already have a significant amount of the supplies. You will definitely want all three components: the student text book, the teacher guide and the lab kit. Each chapter has a lab, done on day four of the week. Every three or four chapters there is a review week before an exam; exams are helpful because Chemistry is a course where concepts continue to build upon each other. While this is definitely a high school level course, I appreciate how easy the text is to follow and understand.
