Presenting the history, implications, and reality of various cultural movements including feminism, critical race theory, LGBTQ+, and others, the author equips us as parents with an understanding of current secular ideologies and their terms so we are prepared to engage our children in conversations about the culture they’re growing up in (not to mention interacting with people steeped in this worldview ourselves). Knowing the terms is key because a lot of the same words are used between the biblical worldview and the postmodern ideologies - including within the progressive “Christian” church - but with an entirely different meaning. Because of details regarding sensitive topics, I recommend this as a book for parents to read through themselves, and then discuss the topics at their discretion with their children. I am grateful to have read this and think it is a very helpful resource for parents.
Some things that were concerning to me and why I can't give this book 5 stars are:
1. When she talks about worldviews in Chapter 4, it was troubling to me that she included Islam into the Theism worldview. I've never heard of this before, and it can be confusing for some, especially new Christians that Islam is the same as Christianity.
2. Then, later in Chapter 11, when she talks about the Character of God, she skips that God is good. We can’t ignore the goodness of God since He calls Himself good many times in the Bible, and I think it is a very important attribute of God to many people. God is indeed just, but He is also good!
3. Last, in chapter 11, she talks about disciples being afraid before resurrection of Christ, but then becoming brave after resurrection, even willing to die for Christ. The author completely skips the fact that the bravery came from the power of the Holy Spirit as the Bible mentions that they were afraid and prayed to God for bravery, and He filled them with power of the Holy Spirit, and they boldly testified to others about Jesus. It’s listed in Acts 4:23-31. Acts chapter 2 also talks about the Holy Spirit initially filling the disciples, and them becoming witnesses of God. We can’t ignore this because it’s significant for our kids to know how to have boldness to preach the Gospel. Without the Holy Spirit, we truly cannot be witnesses of God.
Regardless of these points, I still enjoyed this book and felt that it was very beneficial to me and my family. It edified me to do better as a parent to teach my kids about relationships with God and demonstrate it even more in my life. I am grateful for this book.
