Inspiring!
Review by JoyfulMommy
Jonathan Edwards said, “There are two ways of representing and recommending true religion and virtue to the world, which God hath made use of: the one is by doctrine and precept; the other is by instance and example.”

This beautiful, engaging, and informative book is a wonderful resource of “instance and example.” Short profiles of early church fathers are laid out with a nice amount of text on the pages with beautiful illustrations. Their teaching is well mixed into the biographical storyline, and martyrdom is presented as a reality without going into gory details. Learning about great Christian leaders in history and witnessing the work of the Holy Spirit in their lives fleshes out what Psalm 78:4 describes, telling “the generation to come the praises of the LORD, and His strength and His wondrous works that He has done.” I am grateful for this book, and pray our children will be inspired to imitate the faith of those gone before us! (Hebrews 13:7).
Looking no more!

I have been looking and hoping and praying for a book just like this! Readable, understandable and just the right amount of information about some of the early church fathers that we want our kids to know! I love the timeline at the end of the book that shows how some of the men’s lives overlapped and how they fit in to other key time periods in history. This is such a great addition to early church history! I can’t wait to use this resource with my kids, as I know they are going to enjoy it and being able to understand and appreciate the information about each of these important historical figures!
Inspiring

Early Church Fathers is an encouraging and inspiring book of stories about 10 brave men who played a big part in the history of church. These men sacrificed the comfort and some of them even their lives for Christ. This is a great supplement to the study of the history of the church.

it can also be used in many different ways even as a reader for language arts. Marilyn Boyer did a great job, as always, putting the stories in an easy to understand way. Both: my almost 3rd and a 6th grader enjoyed the stories. The almost 6th grader can read them on his own. It is encouraging for the whole family to learn about faithfulness and love of these men for God. I highly recommend this book. It helps to get a different perspective in our culture of indulgence. It helps to refocus our sight on God and His values. It is very inspiring!
Excellent!

We have loved the What a Character! series by Marilyn Boyer, so when I saw that she was also coming out with a Legends of Faith series, I was so excited! This book does not disappoint.

It starts with an introduction of Jesus, Paul, and John. It then proceeds to tell the stories of 10 early church fathers from Polycarp to John Bunyan. I am excited to have my middle schooler read this book as these men were foundational to the Church & knowing the history of the Church is so important to our own faith!

This would be great to use alongside any history curriculum, or as a stand alone book. Vocabulary is taught throughout, maps start out each biography to help place it, and the detailed timeline at the end really brings it all together! Definitely recommend!

Great intro to early church fathers
Review by BuildingontheRock
Finally. A book on the early church fathers for elementary age kids. Parents will appreciate these short biographies as well. Brief introductions to the likes of Polycarp, Irenaeus, John Knox, John Owen, John Bunyan, and several others are provided along with maps of pertinent locations. Vocabulary words are defined throughout each chapter, with a condensed listing of the words and their definitions at the back of the book. Another great feature is a timeline at the end that shows how the lives of several of the men overlap in the progression on church history. Artificial intelligence was used to develop the illustrations throughout the book. At times the illustrations don’t seem to match the time period of the chapter creating a bit of a disconnect. Otherwise, this is a great introduction to our early church fathers that will hopefully inspire, encourage, and ignite curiosity for further reading and investigation.
Happy kid, happy mom
Review by Barbara D
I have been wanting my kids to know the history that is in this book. My son (age 11, almost 12) was excited to see this book and started reading it right away. It is in the same style and content as the "What a Character" series and by the same author. (Both my son and older daughter love that series.) The pictures are not cartoonish like the aforementioned series. The pictures are beautiful full color of real people (assuming re-enactments). I enjoyed reading this book as well.
I love the introduction of Jesus, Paul, and John. Each of the chapters is notable men who have stood for the gospel over the years. I am very appreciative of the background, history, and culture of the time that starts each chapter before digging into the namesake of each chapter.
I however see this book as rated for grades 6-9 and not bulky enough to be an assumed high school reader. It is a good reader for any age, but I wouldn't recommend it for an age younger than 6th grade.
