I especially appreciate how Boyer explains the lives and sacrifices of these early Christian leaders in a way that’s both age-appropriate and inspiring. My kids gained a deeper appreciation for the courage and conviction it took to help shape the early church. This audiobook has sparked meaningful discussions in our home, and I highly recommend it for families who want to incorporate church history into their homeschool in a gentle, story-driven way.
I would have preferred the author to be the narrator versus the narrator chosen, but this does not prevent me from listening to the book. Maps, timelines, vocabulary words and a glossary are all included within the physical book but can't be enjoyed in the audiobook. Additionally, the first page of each chapter in the physical book has a quote, and some locations and dates mentioned but these sound very random and choppy within the audiobook. For these reasons, I would recommend the audiobook alongside the physical book and not necessarily as a standalone audiobook.
As an adult, I was encouraged and inspired by the lives of these men, and I would recommend this book to middle schoolers or even older elementary students.
I think it is one that will inspire deeper conversations about what true faith is and how to genuinely serve Jesus. These stories are very moving and show how one person devoted to the LORD can make such a big impact on others for eternity. I’m excited to get the whole set now.
Having the book in audio format is so convenient for listening on the go, or increasing comprehension by having the student listen to the audio while following along in a text copy. The narrator reads very clearly, but his intonation and expression can be a bit lulling at times. Overall though it is a great resource to have on hand.
This book is targeted for a middle school, but I think that advanced elementary students may also be able to gain from this book as any troubling events such as the martyrdoms are presented in a matter of fact and not overly graphic manner. I also appreciated that this book gives a factual account without promoting a particular denomination's agenda and is not flavored with a postmodernism bent like many of the other resources of this kind that are on the market. Thank you Masterbooks for this wonderful resource
The reader does read clearly and is easily understood. The pronunciation of some words is not correct, but doesn't take away from the content or flow of the chapters. He did pronounce Martin Luther's Diet of Worms as "deet" which is correct. That context does make a difference and it was done right.
I will note that at the beginning of every chapter where the author describes the times and locations of the chapter, it is not read that way in the audio book. It sounds like a bunch of random dates and locations instead of an overview of the chapter.
I highly recommend it to go along with the physical book but not as a stand alone audio book.
