Way to many questions per lesson
Review by Jack
This curriculum is thorough, but there is way too many questions per lesson. The last lesson my son did if you add up all the a-z questions, plus the 4 or more numbers you have to put into each formula it ended up being a 69-question lesson. It took him 2 hours. That to me is overkill. I will not be ordering high school math anymore thru Master books because the lessons assignments are just too long.
Worked well for us
Review by Tiah
We used Elementary Algebra along with the accompanying Academy course video lessons in 9th grade. I was worried jumping into HS math because It was not my strong suit. My son was able to complete the course with little help from me. I appreciated that GREATLY! The Academy course offers an adjusted schedule so It's not too heavy. This was also fantastic as my son is Autistic and works at a slower pace in general. He was able to finish the course in our normal school time frame.
Tough to teach and to learn
Review by Amy
I have tried using this curriculum with several students and even purchased the academy to see if that would help and my students were confused and struggled to understand the concepts. There is nothing Biblical about this curriculum either and I love the other books that have brought scripture into every lesson. Unfortunately I have to go with another curriculum for elementary algebra.
Well explained!
Review by Ana G
I have always enjoyed algebra, but after not doing algebra for many years, this course is bringing so much back to memory if my high schooler needs help. It's straight forward, well explained and plenty of examples for practice. We'll be using this course for our other children as well!
Elementary Algebra
Review by My student struggled
I was really hoping this would be a good fit for my daughter. We muscled our way through it for 1.5 years and still only made it to lesson 11. We ultimately switched out after realizing at lesson 11 she had major gaps from previous lessons that she had never retained. She was not able to learn the information on her own through the textbook and the academy courses. The lessons and examples were not written well for a self-learner. I think with a tutor or teacher readily available, this curriculum would be just fine. If your child is not mathematically inclined and you or a tutor are not available to teach them the lessons, I would not recommend this course. Her tutor repeatedly showed her easier and clearer ways to solve the problems than were presented in the book. I know my daughter is intelligent and after switching to a different curriculum, she has been able to move forward and now feels like she can do algebra. Wanted to love it, but I hope our experience can help others who are needing a course that non-mathematical students can do on their own.
Best one yet!
Review by Sandie
I came to Master Books after trying so many algebra books (4 others). I had even tried one that is supposed to be for kids that struggle in Math. Nothing worked.
Specifically there are two things that helped:
1) Set 1 gives you a review of prior lessons so you don't forget it.
2) Set 2 has questions that aren't the same equation (but gets harder). You have to solve them in several ways. If you don't understand how to apply it in this way, then let's try it another way.
It helped and I loved it!
Pay for Academy course!
Review by Andrea
This is the best comprehensive curriculum I've seen. It was worth paying for the teaching course through the academy.
Mixed Feelings
Review by SA
I have mixed feelings about this curriculum. Part of our dissatification and struggle with Jacob's Math is my fault. I learn by doing. My daughter, who I bought this for, learns by reading. This is NOT a typical Math currciulum where you read the text, read the examples, and then practice what you learn. Rather this is a learn (and discover) by doing. There is some reading of concepts, however most of the learning happens within the practice problems. My daughter was totally lost. So much so that she wasn't able to complete the book and I didn't realize it until she was so overly frustrated. I failed in my responsibility to understand her learning style and realize this didn't fit her. That being said, if your students are not "doing learners" this is not the curriculum for them. If they need thorough instructions, this is not the curriculum for them. If your students are self-teaching and love to "discover" Math patterns, this might be the perfect curriculum for them. I will add, this is the same review that I will be posting for the Jacobs Geometry because it has the same teaching style and my ninth grader also suffered through this last year.
Very thorough high school level math course
Review by Kathleen C
Each lesson includes instruction on the concept and then four sets of problems for the student. This offers the student flexibility because they can do as many sets as they feel are necessary for learning the material.
Summary and Review lessons.
Includes Final Review Tests and solutions to the Set Two problems from each lesson.
(Sets one, two, and four solutions can be found in the Teacher Guide from MasterBooks)
I like how each lesson relates the topic being taught to a real-life scenario. It is not just random arithmetic.
I like how the author brought some humor into this math course with funny cartoons throughout.

Fantastic book!
Review by SarahT
Reviewing this in anticipation of my kids taking Algebra in a few years was a fantastic experience! The book is so clear compared to other curriculum and so easy to follow along and understand! I will definitely use this along with the Academy videos in order to enhance my kids experience!
