This book is a fantastic addition to history curriculum. Each animal in this book has a short & easy to read story about their part in history. Any words that might be a challenge to young readers are defined right on the page. The illustrations are fun & help kids stay engaged to the story. This book can be used for pure enjoyment or an add on to curriculum. A list of Master Books curriculum that would be good to use this book with is included.
Animals and History
Review by SarahT
Extraordinary Animal Heroes is a fantastic read for those who love animals and want to know their contribution throughout history. This book is a great companion to historical topics covered in social studies and will really make history come to life for students who love animals! My daughter is thrilled with this book!
LOVE this book and this series!
Review by Lacee
A donkey, many dogs, a pigeon, a horse and even a bear! Amazing animals who remarkable tales. I LOVE how these books are set up and how well written they are. Before each section it gives a brief overview of the war or time period the following chapter(s) will be discussing. It’s a great overview including maps and vocabulary words. Then the chapters focus on the amazing animals. Each is a short chapter that tells their story in a captivating way while giving an impressive amount of details and including little vocab sections for the more difficult words for kids to understand.
The book includes a glossary as well as a listing of corresponding curriculum and which chapters can be used in which MB curriculum.
Very Engaging Stories
Review by Kathleen C
This book was written by Marilyn Boyer who is deeply patriotic and passionate about America’s Christian history.

This book tells ten stories of animal heroes: Sergeant Stubby the dog, Murphy the donkey, Balto the dog, Cher Ami the pigeon, Tipperary Beauty the dog, Wojtek the bear, Judy the dog, Sergeant Reckless the horse, Chips the dog, and Smoky the dog. The stories are engaging, and great to keep a young reader's interest.

This is part of the What a Character Series of books. This is great to read as a stand-alone or to accompany your history books.
Great new addition to this series!
Review by Crystal
We have loved all the books from this new Master Books series, and this one is no exception! We all love animals and have been enjoying the stories about animal heroes. I love how the stories are so interesting and add in neat details to the history that we have been studying. Whether read alone by the student, or together as a read aloud, everyone has fun facts to pass on to others.

I love how so many new vocabulary words are introduced throughout the stories. While the meaning can often be deduced in the context of the sentence, the definition is also placed on the page to help. I love these books, my kids love them too, and we look forward to more releases like these!
Perfect Blend of History and Animals
Review by Lexie
Extraordinary Animal Heroes is an adorable book that does a great job at teaching history through stories of animals. The book is divided into 4 historical periods that contains animal stories within each section. When reading through each section, I feel like the author did an amazing job at allowing that animal's story to come alive on the page. The book is also very well illustrated where young and old will be captivated throughout each story. A few of my kids find history to be a little dry at times, so this book really helped bring the stories alive to them.

This book is such a wonderful read. My son loves animal hero books but finding just the right one can be tricky. This book was such a great addition to our bookshelf. It made us want to go out and buy a dog, or a pigeon… just the desire to have a pet in general. This book would make a great resource book to go along with a history curriculum. It amazes me how intricately God has designed animals to be and how they really are designed to work along side man. The true stories in this book brought tears to my eyes and made me so grateful for how our God uses all of His creation for His glory. I definitely recommend this book for any kid grade 3 and up. I would say younger but since it covers animals in war some of the topics maybe a little too sensitive for younger kids. However, it is definitely one you will want to either read with your kids or have them read themselves. The author did such a wonderful job of selecting the animal heroes covered in this book. I had only ever heard of one of them before reading this book and I’m a history buff.. or so I thought. Such a great read!!
Learning for Pleasure!
Review by JoyfulMommy
These are fascinating stories that bring history to life from a new perspective! My third grader is enjoying reading this to siblings and told me one thing she likes about the book is the small illustrations throughout. They help keep the text load on the page a bit lighter for elementary readers, making it feel more achievable and enjoyable. She also likes that each chapter is broken up into small sections, like little chapters within the chapters. There is a full glossary in the back of the book, but we like that the glossary words are also included in side columns as they are introduced in the story. I really appreciate the guide to the corresponding Master Books curriculum in the back, as well, so I can plan the best time to pull in one of these chapters to round out another area we are currently studying. I’m thankful for another great resource that mixes education with reading practice and comprehension, making learning a pleasure!
Excellent for History and Animal Lovers
Review by Santina
Extraordinary Animal Heroes is an engaging read for history and animal lovers alike. Readers learn about the setting and situation of each animal before beginning their story. The stories are appropriate for middle schoolers to read independently. There are several bolded vocabulary words throughout each story (we enjoyed the word jitterbug) that build up the student's vocabulary and fluency.
The colorful art on each page brings the emotions of the animals and people to life. This is a great addition to anyone learning about World War 1, Alaskan Black Death, World War 2, or the Korean War. It would also work well for students who are learning about how setting affects mood, plot, and characters.
Perfect readers for Middle Grades!
Review by Audrey525
The “What a Character” readers are such a fun addition the Master Books repertoire! The new animal heroes’ book is as exciting as it is heartwarming. I have an animal lover in the house and she was thrilled to read these stories and found the illustrations fun and original. The vocabulary words are written in bold throughout and definitions are easily found on the side of the same pages. I would think these stories would be fun to mix into history lessons corresponding with time period being studied. These are not your everyday stories and most were new to us. I highly recommend this series for middle grade students to read. I have one eager reader and one reluctant, and this series is a great fit for both!
