Famous American Statesmen
Review by Santina
Famous American Statesmen is another fantastic addition to the What a Character series of books. You are really drawn into the life of each statesman. The variety of artwork is visually engaging and does a great job conveying the culture of the time (clothing, jobs, ships). This is geared more toward upper elementary and middle school students. It would be great to read as a supplement to America’s Story, part of a morning basket read aloud, or as a stand alone read based on interest.
Great History Examples
Review by Yulia
Famous American Statesmen is another great addition to the What a Character series. This book talks about amazing men who were at the foundation of our country's freedom. They are great examples of bravery, dedication, wisdom, perseverance and love for God. This specific book is an important one since it teaches kids such valuable character traits and amazing lessons to love and follow God. We enjoyed reading this together. I am glad the author is giving us such a wonderful gift in this series. I highly recommend!
Engaging History
Review by Lexie
This 'What a Character!' series is simply amazing for all ages. My kids are loving reading the books, not realizing how much history they are learning in the process. I've learned so much about the character of different people in history that I can now see through a new light. This book covers ten men who helped form our country. Many of the people presented on were men in history we had discussed before, but this book provided information well beyond any history book. There are really enjoyable pictures intertwined throughout the book which helps to add to the stories. Words that are difficult to understand are defined in the margin as well as in the glossary. Our favorite chapter was about Francis Scott Key. We felt that this book made him more than just the person who wrote 'The Star Spangled Banner' - there was so much more to his story! If you are looking for a book that is a clean way to teach history without a history book!
Great series!
Review by Dustie
My 11 year old is loving this series. It is full of fascinating and engaging stories of different characters throughout history. This particular book covers the lives of ten men who helped shape the United States. I appreciate how the author included information about their early days, as I think it makes the stories more relatable and inspiring to children.
This book is great for independent reading, as it is fun and has definitions for words that may be unfamiliar or difficult for younger readers to understand. It would make a great read-aloud or morning basket addition. These stories would also be really fun to include with corresponding history lessons, and there’s even a list in the back of the book that notes potential books to pair each chapter with.
Overall, I highly recommend this entire series of books for every home library. They’re such a fun way to learn bits of history. The set would also make a great Christmas gift, in my opinion.
Fantastic Biographies
Review by Emilie
I LOVE THIS BOOK! I am learning so much from reading this book out loud to the kids! It’s a great accompaniment to the America Story history book. There’s so much detail about the lives of these men that I didn’t even know about. I highly recommend for anyone just wanting to have some fun extra reading around the house or to add to your homeschool curriculum!
