History Road Trips
Review by Rachel
What a fun and exciting way to learn about historical characters! I love the audiobook that for us can turn road trips into historical fun and feasts!! We love listening to these stories as the lives of the statesmen come alive and keep us excited to learn about our country’s past. Even my non-history loving kids forget that they are “doing school” when we are listening to these as we drive along. I cannot recommend these enough!
Famous American Statesmen
Review by Santina
Famous American Statesmen is another fantastic addition to the What a Character series of books. You are really drawn into the life of each statesman. Will Stauff’s voice is engaging and does a great job drawing the listener into the life of each statesmen. This is geared more toward upper elementary and middle school students. It would be great to listen to as a supplement to America’s Story, part of a morning basket read aloud, or as a stand-alone audiobook based on interest.
Good road trip audiobook.

This audiobook is a great companion to the physical book and also makes an excellent travel listen for elementary-aged children.
I thoroughly enjoy listening to history!
Review by Michelle C.
I have come to learn that I really enjoy and benefit from audiobooks. I enjoy listening to stories while my hands are busy with the duties that motherhood and homeschooling bring. Famous American Statesmen has been interesting and informative to listen to. This book features the stories of 10 men who impacted history, and each story is about 15 minutes in length. I really appreciate a way to learn history in bite-sized chunks. I have learned the basics about several men without being bogged down by a longer biography. The stories don’t have to be read in order so this book is a great tool to have when we want to learn more about a specific person.

I recommend this to kids ages 10 and up, all the way up to adults. This would make a great audiobook for a family with older children.
Brings American history to life!
Review by Kathleen C
I love this series. It is a fantastic way to teach children history through the lens of character and faith. Marilyn Boyer writes in a way that shows her passion for history and a moral education.
This book focuses on the lives and moral character of influential American leaders, aiming not just to inform, but to inspire.

The author profiles several notable American statesmen—including George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, and others—highlighting their personal virtues, patriotism, and contributions to the founding and shaping of the United States. Each chapter is structured around biographical storytelling, moral lessons, and historical context, often supported by Scripture and discussion questions.

The book emphasizes traits such as integrity, courage, and faith, making history more personal to young readers. I appreciated the way she integrated biblical principles throughout the stories, reinforcing moral values alongside historical education.
This format has review questions that lead to great discussions. This is great for a read-aloud for children of different ages.

The audio book is read by Will Stauff. I like the pace he reads and find his voice for comfortable to listen to.
Wonderful audio time!
Review by Michelle
We do daily audiobook/podcast time during which the kids are usually busy with their hands. This has been an amazing find. We previously enjoyed another history audiobook that we had to quit because of fuzzy values and worldview. This one is refreshingly solid and I don't have to debrief anyone afterwards! Definitely recommend.
Great read aloud!

We love hearing all about the interesting American Statesmen from history!
Important Historical Figures Interesting & Bite-sized
Review by Michele
I love learning new things that are aspects of biographies I was never taught in school. I have gained new insight about all of these subjects, both those I was familiar with, as well as some I knew mostly nothing about (thought I vaguely remember some mnemonic device about their name for a history test). These biography sketches these characters of history back to life. The audio version was nice to listen to in the car or while we were doing other tasks to save my read-aloud voice. I have really enjoyed supplementing America's Story with these What a Character series books.
Bios of Courageous Men
Review by BuildingontheRock
Listening to these condensed biographies was a great review with my children on what we learned in America’s Story 1. They kept chiming in, “I remember that!” and joining in when they heard famous quotes we have talked about: “Give me liberty or give me death!” The kids were very engaged with this audiobook and wanted to continue listening while running errands. The narrator speaks at a quick pace but the audiobook apps usually have a way to slow the speed down if need be for listeners who may need a bit more processing time. One improvement I would suggest is the inclusion of chapter titles. Maybe it was the audio app I was using (BookPlayer) but only numbers of chapters were listed so without having a hard copy of the book we had no idea whose bio we would be hearing next. Otherwise this was a very thought provoking book on the lives of courageous men who greatly influenced the making and trajectory of our nation.
The Power of Words!
Review by Charity
When I first heard the title Famous American Statesmen and saw a few of the names listed, I wondered if it would be redundant since several of the men are also featured in the other volumes of this series. I was wrong! I love how these men are grouped together so that you can see the similarities and differences in the life events that influenced their career as a statesman. The story of Henry Clay, and a few others, were new to me and gave me a fresh appreciation for the sacrifices the American people had to endure on the path to independence. Each of these men's passionate messages have shaped our country and it's history as we know it.

I usually enjoy the audiobook for the What A Character, but the narrator was a bit difficult to listen to for 1 or 2 of the stories on this one. Otherwise, it is a great resource for discussion as you travel in the car or anywhere really. As always, some of of the stories may be intense for the tenderhearted as they contain some war related peril.
