Courageous examples!
Review by JoyfulMommy
These stories introduced us to people I was unfamiliar with such as Elizabeth Zane and James Coulter, and helped us become better acquainted with others we already knew of. Their courage and boldness in the face of danger is inspiring! This book series is great for bringing history to life for my late elementary readers, but having the audiobook makes it useful for the entire family as we listen together in the car or while doing quiet activities. Complements America’s Story wonderfully!
Entertaining Stories
Review by Laurie
This audio series is an excellent fit for my 1st and 6th graders. The stories are a great length—not too long, yet long enough to learn a lot about each person's life. We have a couple of What a Character series audiobooks; they are all fantastic and perfect for playing in the background while doing daily tasks. My 6th grader often asks for "just one more story."
Famous Pioneers and Frontiersmen
Review by Santina
I am very impressed with the amount of detail put in each of the stories of Famous Pioneers and Frontiersmen. The reader is put into the life and culture of each character. Famous Pioneers is a great way to incorporate more history into your school day (whether you are adding to history or language arts). The vocabulary words, glossary, and curriculum suggestions are consistent with the other books in the series and are super helpful.
Great Audiobook!
Review by Lexie
This 'What a Character!' series is simply amazing for all ages. My kids are loving reading the books, not realizing how much history they are learning in the process. The stories in this book about pioneers and frontiersmen were really interesting. It is always fun to learn more about people you thought you knew a lot about. This book also contains people in history I had never read about before such as Jim Bridger. Our favorite story in this book was about John Colter and how he survived an Indian attack by hiding underwater and breathing through a hollow reed! I've learned so much about the character of different people in history that I can now see through a new light. The reader's voice makes for a very enjoyable learning experience in this audiobook. We found this audiobook to be a blessing to our weekly routine as we travel to music lessons. I highly recommend this book in the physical and audio version!
Amazing series!
Review by Dustie
I genuinely love this whole series! This book is no exception. While it covers the stories of some well-known pioneers and frontiersmen, such as Daniel Boone and Davy Crocker, there are some I was not familiar with, like Elizabeth Zane and Jim Bridger. It contains the same spirit of adventure as other volumes of the series, helping children gain a love for history.
This book is great for independent reading, as it is fun and has definitions for words that may be unfamiliar or difficult for younger readers to understand. It would make a great read-aloud or morning basket addition. These stories would also be really fun to include with corresponding history lessons, and there’s even a list in the back of the book that notes potential books to pair each chapter with.
Overall, I highly recommend this entire series of books for every home library. They’re such a fun way to learn bits of history.
