The New Ocean Book

Explore Earth’s final frontier—the oceans! These dark and sometimes mysterious waters cover 71 percent of the surface area of the globe and have yet to be fully explored. From the practical to the pretty amazing, students will learn what weather is, how it works, and how other forces impact it! Learn why storm chasers and hurricane hunters do what they do and how they are helping to solve storm connected mysteries. Discover what makes winter storms both beautiful and deadly, what is behind weather phenomena like St. Elmo’s Fire, as well as:

  • Find out how forecasting is done, what “engine” drives weather on Earth, and why
  • Discover the importance and patterns of the jet stream, the global water cycle, and why water runoff is essential to the food chain
  • Learn the classifications of clouds, what causes ball lightning, the life cycle of thunderstorms, and amazing weather facts!

Excellent!

My son enjoyed this very much! It allowed him to read for understanding and to answer the questions based on his comprehension. I am glad that the questions were a bit challenging so that he would have to read but the books were engaging allowing him to look forward to learning. Although learning can be challenging but it should also be fun, something they look forward to doing. The Master Books Academy video lessons were also engaging and helped him to be independent with his work and to organize how he was going to approach his lessons with the reading, video and worksheets.
Perfect for Independent learning!

I've used General Science 1 with two kids in middle school. This was a perfect choice for learning to be more independent learners! The lesson plans were easy to follow and the textbooks were engaging.
Almost too easy
Review by Gloria
We used this for middle school and it seemed too easy to find the answers. The book is easy to read and understand, has lots of nice pictures that make it enjoyable but the questions weren't challenging enough for my child. We appreciated the layout and the way it was planned for each day.
Wonderful Set

These beautiful books are comprehensive and easy to follow and scale for students level. I used them for my 6th, 8th and 9th grader in the same school year. I highly recommend
Great for students

This is a great curriculum. We are using it for 7th grade. However, because this is set up for grades 7-12, there are some things that could be a bit more teacher friendly. The textbooks are well laid out in what info is geared towards older/HS students vs what is for middle school. The teacher guide, where all the worksheets, quizzes, and tests are located have no such distinction. It would be so helpful for parents teaching a middle schooler to know what vocab words and questions are coming from the HS sections so we can decide if we want our middle school student to be responsible for those. As of now, the only way to know is to basically find the answers in the book yourself.
Great overview
Review by Kathryn
We appreciated the general overview of different subjects in science. Astronomy, Minerals, and Ocean were favorites; Weather was more dry, but still very informative and we pushed through. The worksheets were basic and helped gauge comprehension. The pictures and diagrams are engaging. A great foundation before studying upper level sciences.
Absolutely Excellent!

Our 14-15 year old son has been thrilled with this program; it has changed his entire disposition toward science! We switched from a very tedious, what he calls boring (and overwhelming program that also had videos), to this beginning in November. We bought the videos by Brian Young to accompany the pkg, and we love this!
Very interesting, perfect length, really gets us both thinking, so easy, so affordable! There's no doubt we have found the curriculum we want to continue using through high school. Our son says he'd love to meet Mr. Young some day! I highly recommend adding the videos, they add a whole new dimension to an already very engaging program.
As for (me) the teacher, the lesson plan books and are the most helpful thing. MasterBooks stood out for us from the time we tried it back in 4th grade with Passport to the World. He loved that series so much he read the books at night before bed during and after the program. This approach has been like night and day for us compared to all the others we've tried over the years. We really look forward to our days, gone is the overwhelm! He's learning SO MUCH MORE with this than he did and engages conversation almost every evening. What a blessing!
Great for struggling learners!

My daughter has convergence insufficiency, which presents like dyslexia, and went through vision therapy to help correct it. Her reading has improved significantly but she still struggles a bit. I intended on using another popular science curriculum which I used with her older brother - but I thought it would be too technical and over her head. I found Master Books General Science 1 and she has LOVED it! The layout, images, illustrations, and charts are SUPER helpful. The activities are great with a few choices on what the kids can do - she prefers the ones that copy illustrations from the book. :)
