Fun Historical Addition

What a fun read! Even though it targets grades 6-8, I have learned from the book as well as my littles from listening in. The visuals are great and aid in understanding. I like the defined words throughout to help build vocabulary. We used the book to help choose a historical figure to do a deep dive on. The short length of the chapters made this a great supplement to our normal curriculum. I love the glossary at the end as well as where it connects each chapter to different curriculums, including not only history but also language arts.

Great series!

This series continues to deliver! Our family loves these books – they are a great addition to a morning basket, or as a fun addition to our curriculum. We are going to be starting American History this year, so I am excited to have this book to add to our learning. I love how each story is interesting, but not super long, allowing us to easily integrate them into our school day. There are also a lot of new vocabulary words introduced, giving us a fun way to add in more learning. Looking forward to more from this same series!

I love that Master Books and Marilyn Boyer have continued this series with Heroes of the War for Independence. These readers are SO easy and enjoyable to read through. It is easy to assign just one person’s story to read throughout your school year when you are learning about each in history or to read the entire reader. This book is dedicated to Heroes of the Revolution: Paul Revere, John Peter Gabriel, Betsy Ross, John Stark, Mad Anthony Wayne, John Sevier, Reverend James Caldwell, Nathanael Greene, Emily Geiger, and Marquis de Lafayette. The book starts with a brief overview of what happened before and led to the American Revolution. There’s a great map showing major battles and their dates. You get an introduction to each Hero, their lives, what was happening around them during the war and what they are famous for. Each section also has key terms and great pictures. I particularly liked reading about Betsy Ross.

Great Series

This series of books is a great addition to any library. While it targets grades 6-8, I greatly benefitted from reading it. It would be a great read aloud to younger children as well. My boys love the illustrations throughout the book and it helps tie into the story. I am thankful for the definition of words on many of the pages to help the younger students understand what the words mean. This book specifically focuses on people during the American Revolution so adding it as independent reading while our family studies that segment of history helped to foster a better understanding and appreciation of the sacrifices people made to allow our country to be free. Some well known people from this time period are covered, like Paul Revere and Betsy Ross, while others I had not heard of are taught.

ten heroes. You will learn so much about American history just by reading each biography. This book
does a great job of setting the backdrop for the War for Independence before diving into each
biography. The bolded words, definitions, and glossary are an excellent way to foster independence for
your middle school student. Another great book in the What a Character series!

The stories are engaging, and great to keep a young reader's interest. I have been to Sevierville Tennessee many times. It was so interesting to read about the man that area was named for.
This is part of the What a Character Series of books. This is great to read as a stand-alone or to accompany your history books.

Heroes of the War for Independence is an excellent addition to the What a Character! series. It covers the time period of 1775-1783 and includes stories about Paul Revere, Betsy Ross, Mad Anthony Wayne and more!
We have loved being able to pull this volume out as we studied the American Revolution while reading through America’s Story 1. Being able to dig deeper into the lives of the people we encounter has truly brought history to life for my kids. They love this series and are constantly reaching for the books on their own.
This is definitely a book to add to your collection!

This is an enjoyable reader that covers ten of the heroes of the Revolutionary War. It’s a great introduction to this period in history. The illustrations are pleasant and help break apart the text for kids who prefer that.
This book is great for independent reading, as it is fun and has definitions for words that may be unfamiliar or difficult for younger readers to understand. It would make a great read-aloud or morning basket addition. These stories would also be really fun to include with corresponding history lessons, and there’s even a list in the back of the book that notes potential books to pair each chapter with.
Overall, I highly recommend this entire series of books for every homeschool library. They’re such a fun way to learn bits of history.
