In Luke chapter 23 of the Bible, Jesus is brought before Pilate, the Roman governor. The religious leaders accuse Jesus of stirring up the people and claiming to be the Messiah, the king. Pilate questions Jesus but finds no guilt in him. However, when Pilate learns that Jesus is from Galilee, he sends him to Herod, who happens to be in Jerusalem at that time. Herod is excited to see Jesus and hopes to witness a miracle, but Jesus remains silent and refuses to entertain him. Herod and his soldiers mock Jesus, dress him in a splendid robe, and send him back to Pilate. Pilate tries to release Jesus, as he still finds no basis for charges against him, but the crowd insists on Barabbas, a notorious criminal, being released instead. Pilate reluctantly gives in to the crowd's demand and sentences Jesus to crucifixion. As Jesus carries his cross, Simon of Cyrene is compelled to help him. Jesus is then crucified alongside two criminals. Despite the insults and mockery, Jesus shows forgiveness and promises one of the criminals that he will be with him in paradise. Darkness falls over the land, and Jesus breathes his last breath, declaring, "Father, into your hands, I commit my spirit." The centurion witnesses the events and praises God, recognizing Jesus as innocent. Jesus' body is taken down and buried in a tomb, with women who followed him mourning his death.

A thoughtful perspective
Review by Laura
I must admit that I never thought about what Barabbus was thinking when it came to him being released instead of Jesus. This story has a very impactful message about how much God loves everyone, despite our sin, as well as His grace and mercy for those who believe in Him. As with this whole series of books, there is a short glossary at the end to help kids fully understand what was read. We are truly enjoying this series of books!
Great for reading practice and starting gospel conversations with children
Review by JoyfulMommy
Not only is this a wonderful little book with a powerful message, it also provides great reading practice. My early readers enjoy reading some of the pages when we are reading this aloud together and though they need help with some of the words, many of them are sight words or easily sounded out phonetically. It’s also easy and enjoyable for my third grader (and up) to read to younger siblings, and easy for them to follow and understand.

This book uses the story of Barabbas to show us how Jesus took the punishment we deserve, giving us the opportunity to start a new life. It has led into some rich gospel conversations with my children as we read and talk about it.

The “about the author” page is neat as it tells a little bit about Luke and how you can read his other true stories about Jesus in the Gospel of Luke in the Bible. (My children love that part and never want me to skip it!) There’s also a basic glossary with a few words at the end. I’m thankful for this addition to our library.
Love this book!
Review by Becky V.
This is a great age-appropriate retelling of the true story of Luke 23 where the criminal, Barabbas, is released and Jesus is crucified in his place. This book does an excellent job at explaining how just as with Barabbas, Jesus also took our place too when he died on the Cross.

We have absolutely loved this book series as a family!
