In Luke chapter 5 of the Bible, Jesus calls Simon Peter, James, and John to be his disciples. He gets into Simon Peter's boat and teaches the people from there. Afterward, Jesus tells Simon Peter to go into deeper water and let down the nets for a catch, even though they had been fishing all night without success. Despite his doubts, Simon obeys and catches such a large number of fish that their nets begin to break. Overwhelmed by this miracle, Simon falls at Jesus' feet and confesses his unworthiness, but Jesus reassures him and tells him that he will now fish for people.

Great for reading practice and conversation starters
Review by JoyfulMommy
Not only is this a wonderful little book with a powerful message, it also provides great reading practice. My early readers enjoy reading some of the pages when we are reading this aloud together and though they need help with some of the words, many of them are sight words or easily sounded out phonetically. It’s also easy and enjoyable for my elementary students to read to younger siblings, and easy for them to follow and understand.

This book tells about how Jesus called Simon Peter from the fishing boat where Jesus preached, to be fisher of men. Peter’s response to miraculously catching fish after toiling all night in vain is a perfect example of the humility we should each feel in the presence of God when we recognize His power and holiness, and our sinfulness and weakness. But what wondrous love that God chooses us as His servants, to indwell us with His Spirit and use us as His witnesses!

The “about the author” page is neat as it tells a little bit about Luke and how you can read his other true stories about Jesus in the Gospel of Luke in the Bible. (My children love that part and never want me to skip it - although we do always talk about how the Holy Spirit spoke through Luke to give us this gospel.) There’s also a basic glossary with a few words at the end. I’m thankful for this addition to our library.
We love this series!

This series of children’s books is so precious. My family has really enjoyed them. This particular story is the touching account of Jesus calling Simon Peter to follow Him. It encourages children to follow Him, as well. The little section at the end that tells about the biblical author is a neat addition that helps familiarize children with the those who penned scripture under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. This whole series is a great addition to a home library and would make an excellent gift.
