Just what exactly is social studies, you may ask? Well, it includes the study of all kinds of people and places, some far away and some next door. In this book we talk about families, like your family in your house, and also lots of people close by, which we call a town or city, and finally about even more people in cities or outside of cities, all living in big places called countries.

Level one begins with children in their homes, helping them think about their lives from their immediate families and beyond, as well as learning about local governments. Includes four quests.

This is a daily adventure-based curriculum series that encourages families to explore the world together through four, nine-week quests and to understand it better from God’s perspective. It is designed with elements that make weekly learning fun and interactive, including:

  • Activity time
  • Word find time
  • Review time
  • My story journal

Learn all about the world while you discover more about your own. And make sure you pull out your Quest Collector Cards at the beginning of each quest. Your world map on the other side shows where you are in each lesson!

Good but a little overwhelming and a lot of writing
Review by AM
My Story 1 was our first My Story book and it is our least favorite of the three. The information is good, the pictures are beautiful and add to the curriculum rather than just being there to add beauty, and we really enjoy the language time. However, we found this to be a bit overwhelming as a first grade curriculum. The amount of writing is a lot for a first grader, and the book jumps in right away with activities and My Story Journals that involve a fair amount of writing instead of starting small and increasing expectations throughout the year. I ended up scribing a lot for my student. We'll use this book again this next year, but I will be picking and choosing activities and adjusting assignments early on to be more developmentally appropriate for an early first grader's writing skills. Overall, this is a good social studies course as long as you remember that the curriculum is a tool and only do what works for you and your child!
Very good balance between social studies and geography
Review by Mrs. Thomas
We have been searching for a good social studies curriculum for several years and are very happy that we chose my story 1 for this year. My son enjoys the lessons and that they aren’t extremely long. We really enjoy the geography aspects of this curriculum as well. Looking forward to my story 2 next year!
Love this connection with my child

We just started this curriculum and already LOVE IT! I love how the very 1st thing he learns in history, is about him, who he is, how he became, and about his family. He asked questions that he may have never asked, had this book not already spark his attention! Thank you Masterbooks!!
Good but very repetitive

I love the beginning of each lesson. I love their approach to social studies for the younger ages. The first two days are fun and very much learning about different places around the world. However days 3-5 are very boring for my son and I feel most of the learning is done in the first day, and the rest of the week is a lot of “filler” I have started trying to stretch the first day of information out over the course of the week and adding in the other days “filler activities” randomly. All in all it is still very informative and my son has learned a lot about the world so far!
Simple and easy to understand!

These have been good for us, with small tweaks! We find it’s a lot of reading but we skip over some things — they have learned a lot!
My daughter loves it!

We are really enjoying My Story Level 1! I appreciate MB’s approach to social studies with introducing younger students to concepts and places around the world in bite sized pieces so that they can go deeper later when they’ve gotten the foundation. My daughter loved level K and is enjoying level 1 as well. She’s always excited when it’s time for social studies!

Our son is learning a lot in this book! This is a great book especially for his age group.
Not my favorite

We are exclusively MB and have been for all 5 years of homeschooling. I think this is the only book that I wouldn’t recommend. It was alright but the work felt tedious at times.
Not our favorite.

My son struggled to make it through this course a few years ago. He didn't understand a lot of the words used and was a bit too young to understand a lot of the concepts. Maybe if he were a little older it would've worked. He didn't like the word puzzles at all, and does not like coloring. So we ended up skipping most of the activities to save some frustration, which felt like a waste. My younger son is now in first grade so we are going to try the My Story K instead for his 1st grade History. And try this course again for his second year. Otherwise it was very organized and interesting for me. Just a chore to get my boy engaged.
Good but simple
