Fun American History
Review by LaceeC
I have loved every book I have read by Angela O’Dell and this is no different. I’m glad she did a high school US History book. I love her more conversational style vs dry history books, it keeps students much more engaged in what they are reading and learning about. I love what Mrs. O’Dell says in the introduction, “True history is never cold or detached; it is alive with the heartbeat of those who lived it.” History should be fun to learn.

Starting off in lesson 1 talking about WHY we should study our nation’s history helps put students in the right mindset for this book and challenges them to truly think about why we study history, and what God has to do with it. Each unit starts with a timeline of events to help students put events in order. I appreciate the maps throughout and think this would go well with the US portion of Master Books new High School geography curriculum as well. There are a total of 34 lessons covering everything from before the Colonial Era to the current presidency of President Trump. The reading is not difficult and I think it is a perfect balance between giving the information and too much reading.

In this teacher guide, I think the amount of writing hits the right mark - not too much while still challenging your high school student. Students will do the required reading, then in the teacher guide will complete the vocabulary terms, reading comprehension and investigative questions, then writing, discussion or map-based activities for each lesson. I appreciate the added optional projects and activities to enhance learning.
Excellent History Course
Review by Becky V.
We have been so excited for the release of One Nation Under God. We are big fans of Angela O’Dell and have always appreciated her work, including her elementary and middle school history courses and her podcast.

This history course, utilizing the teacher guide, is easy to stay consistent with. It’s a full high school American History credit for grades 9–12, with a simple daily plan. Assignments include readings, glossary terms, and a mix of questions, writing, or map work. The variety helps keep it interesting and engaging.

It is set up so that your student can do most of it independently, with check-ins as needed, weekly ones should do. That makes it very manageable to fit into your daily work.

The biblical perspective is important to us, and it’s clearly woven throughout.

There are three reviews built in. One each semester and a final with study days scheduled, which helps with pacing.

Overall, it’s a straightforward, open-and-go history course that covers what it should without overcomplicating things.
Excellent addition to the textbook
Review by JoyfulMommy
This workbook for use with the textbook, One Nation Under God, is laid out in standard Master Books fashion with three-hole-punched and perforated pages, and open-and-go format with a schedule in the front and clearly marked assignments on the worksheets. Students engage with the text through vocabulary and map work, analysis and summarization of what they read in the textbook, and Scripture study. They are also prompted to truly think about and develop their own convictions about what they are learning. I think this workbook will greatly enhance the study of One Nation Under God and give students a grasp not only of American history, but also of where they fit in God’s story of our nation and the world.
Another wonderful O’Dell curriculum
Review by Sara G
Our family is a big fan of Angela O’Dell. I held off my high schooler’s American History in anticipation of this set coming out, and we are so happy to finally receive it! You can alway see the blood sweat and tears she puts into her work and its is evident through this course as well!

The book is full of great color, maps pictures. Each lesson goes over what is going to be studied, a bible verse to support with a biblical worldview woven throughout while still giving the truth of what happened in history. History can be tragic and messy and Angela has always put things into perspective in such wonderful way.

The course organized for your student to be open and go, take about 45minutes to complete each day and go over not only the subject matter, but have questions for critical thinking and analysis as well as ties in to our faith. Each day of the week is usually set up the same to help your child absorb information and be able to tackle assignments. There is assigned reading, glossary terms, questions, writing assignments, and map work. There are quester reviews to make sure your student is retaining information. Our family would highly recommend this course!
History from a biblical worldview
Review by Dustie
Angela O’Dell’s America’s Story and World’s Story books have been a part of our children’s education for several years, and we have enjoyed every level. I have genuinely looked forward to the release of this level. I am reading through this course material in anticipation of my using it with my upcoming ninth grader.
First, the structure is very similar to other Master Book’s courses. The consistency in structure is such a comfort! The assigned reading and worksheets/exams seem to coordinate well with one another. The daily assignments are broken into digestible sections and are not overwhelming. The additional resources in the back of the book are especially helpful. You’ll find things like the complete Declaration of Independence, The Gettysburg Address, The Star-Spangled Banner, various character sketches, and the Mayflower Compact. I found this section particularly interesting and helpful. Somehow, having all these resources that have profoundly affected our nation’s history feels special. The glossary in the back of the textbook is also a helpful addition.
Next, in the latter sections of the book the author covers recent history. I truly appreciate that the author does not shy away from the controversial topics that are a present challenge for these students who will soon be launching into the world as adults. She addresses these topics from a biblical worldview and does not sugar coat the consequences of some of the unbiblical choices made by leaders, lawmakers, and various citizens of our nation. These topics are presented in a way that encourages critical thinking and development of the student’s worldview. I think this also provides an important opportunity for families to discuss these topics in more depth and to look toward scripture for guidance.
Finally, the course is a comprehensive look at American history from a biblical worldview. The author presents the events in the story of our nation, good and bad, in an engaging way, rather than a series of names and dates. I am looking forward to using this with my upcoming high school student.
Wonderful tools for examining important events in our Nation's history
Review by Charity
I really like how this teacher's guide is laid out with a variety of activities to help aid reading comprehension and take the student deeper into higher order thinking skills with writing prompts and opportunities for exploring topics further.

The first two chapters as shown in the free preview are not formatted quite the same as the rest of the exercises. The worksheets for the beginning chapters are more focused on comprehension since there is so much background information packed in the first two chapters of the student book.

Once you start to get into the meat of the course, the questions start to require a lot more critical thinking skills with a lot more short answer and extended response questions. Normally I'm pretty skeptical of the comprehension type questions like multiple choice matching and true/false but I do like the way these are laid out as a a foundation for the deeper questions to follow. Each chapter has many "think like an investigative reporter" questions which begin with either who, what, when, where, or how, let's help the student engage deeper and evaluate the different cause and effect relationships throughout history.

I'm so excited for a high school history course from a biblical worldview perspective that is balanced and does not hide the effects of sin on history but also acknowledges Providence of God. This teacher's guide is a perfect companion to help the students dig deeper and examine their own thoughts and understanding of United States History along the way.
I wish I had this in High School

The Teacher Guide, or workbook really adds to the richness of this course. Every day has assignments for multiple learning styles and includes; match the terms, fill in the blanks, multiple choices, short answers, and long answers. I really liked that there were many cause and effect worksheets, especially in relation to wars. This is showing that there is a definite effect to actions and gets the student to critically think.
I also like the flexible additional assignments at each page. It is up to the parent/teacher discretion on what assignment is done and when it is due. This is a great flexibility to meet a struggling learner that needs more time, or an advanced learner that needs more. I was concerned about high school history for my kids... not anymore. History is fun!
*As a PDF, it can be print in B&W, but some activities (like maps) color would be beneficial.
Wonderful

This a wonderful and engaging curriculum that brings history to life, while pointing back to God’s hand in America’s story. We also love that it is has everything laid out clearly with scope and sequence, and even a schedule you can use!
