We also use the academy course since she is doing level 2, which has spelling activities in it! I'm hoping the other levels will have academy courses, too, eventually!
One of the things I love most is that the review feels gentle but thorough. It keeps skills fresh and gives my child the chance to master concepts at a steady pace. The layout is clean and inviting, and the bite-sized practice makes it easy to fit into our daily routine without causing frustration. I love how there are key concept sections. I can easily see what my child will be practicing. I am also very happy optional schedules were included to help me see how to use it alongside the Language Lessons 2 book.
Practice Makes Polished 2 has been a valuable tool in our homeschool. I highly recommend it to other homeschooling families who want a solid supplement that encourages both learning and confidence.
Practice Makes Polished 2 offers four main spelling activities that repeat throughout the section. I understand that repetition can be beneficial for younger students, but when my daughter dislikes two of the spelling activities, I would have loved to see more variety in this area.
The grammar and reading section provides the extra practice needed without being overwhelming. We have had fun utilizing the Word Play stories while reviewing grammar concepts.
We haven’t used the writing section a whole lot yet as my daughter still needs to grow her writing stamina, but she has enjoyed the Journal days and as a homeschool mom, I’m very excited to see the journal prompts!
Overall, Practice Makes Polished 2 is a great resource for practicing language arts concepts. Its simple format is full of color and age-appropriate illustrations without being cluttered or overwhelming. I recommend this book and look forward to future levels.
Overall, I like that the activity types are separated because you can choose to just focus on one area if needed and ignore that parts that your student does not need at the time. Most of the activities reference and utilize each week's spelling words,
The variety of activities for spelling practice is certainly what shines brightest in Practice Makes Polished 2, but we have especially loved the the grammar and reading practice section. For us the mad lib style grammar worksheets have been great opportunities for writing practice and developing thinking skills needed for good writing without an overwhelming amount of written work. This activity along with with the spelling and reading practice, has been a great bridge for my struggling student who is not quite ready for the full Language Lessons Level 2 course yet due to writing ability.
One note, the grammar and reading section does not have a word list on the page so you may find it helpful to print off the spelling word lists from the supplemental resource page for easy reference. They are not necessary to complete the activities though. All other activities do include the spelling words for reference on the page as they are needed.
The writing section seems a bit more advanced than the earlier sections. There is a weekly journal prompt on one side and a section to practice using spelling words in a sentence. This section would be great to add in as you prepare to transition to level 3 which requires quite a bit more writing ability.
The PDF is nice for a supplement like this in case you would like to use an exercise during the year for practice and again at the end of the year for review. My current student has said that she doesn't mind that we are using black and white, but if you can afford color, the extra little cute graphics add some fun to the page as well.
Overall Practice Makes Polished is a phenomenal resource to help you as the teacher to better tailor the curriculum to fit your student's needs. I'm so thankful for the Master Books approach and their desire to equip us to help our students succeed.
