Customer Reviews
I highly recommend this book in both physical and digital formats. As a PDF, I can print what I need when I need it, and I can use the pages in any order.
I was pleasantly surprised by the Teaching Aids section in the back of the book! The Charts and Helps pages provide grammar definitions and examples that were exactly what I was in the process of creating for my son. These pages will save me so much time, and I hope to see them expanded in future levels. Overall, I am very pleased with this resource because it was intentionally written and designed with both teachers and students in mind. I look forward to exploring future levels with my students!
This book is organized into three sections: Spelling Practice, Grammar and Reading Practice, and Writing Practice. Each of those three sections contains 36 lessons, usually two worksheets per lesson. If you are working on lesson 1 and want to do all of the practice pages, you will need to flip to each of the three sections and find the pages for lesson 1. The grammar and reading practice sheets have a focus towards penguins in nearly every lesson. My daughter loves penguins, so this was very appealing to her. The writing section gives specific directions for writing sentences, and also keeping a weekly journal. I particularly like that the students are given a different writing prompt each week. These journal pages will be a great keepsake to look back on.
At the back of the book there are helpful reference pages and also additional penguin activities that can be completed, such has how to draw a penguin. Overall, I think this book is a good addition for those looking for additional language arts work. The pages are colorful and there are a variety of activities to complete
Much like the level 2 of Practice makes Polished there is extra spelling practice activities and journal entries (which are my daughter's favorite).
I wish I had this years ago for my oldest, but now I don't have to worry about adding in anything if there's something my kid needs extra practice in.
Having the book divided into skill sections is great for keeping focused on the areas that need the most work and not getting bogged down by all of the extras. This also makes the book more versatile to use to add a challenge or remediate for any student regardless of grade level.
For example, my level 2 student loves that she gets to do reading practice in a higher level book which is a confidence booster for her. The grammar stories are a great simplified way to reinforce parts of speech for my 10 yo, but the whole family has enjoyed joining in which has brought lots of great laughs together and has gotten the 5 yo wanting to learn more about nouns, verbs, etc. The Journaling activity has also been a hit with all ages. The spelling pages are great for practice. My kids especially liked the sight word word searches.
I love using the PDF version to print select activities as needed. The pages are designed with a wider margin on one side for binding though so I learned the hard way that if you double side multiple pages of the same type of activity, like two reading selections, they will be difficult to punch holes in and use in a prong folder because the text will go into the binding. Now I know for next timew
Overall we all love these books and can't wait for the other levels to be released!
Each of the three sections—writing, spelling, and grammar—has clear outlines and well-thought-out activities, making it easy to follow and implement. I especially appreciate that I can even use it with my older children when there’s a small gap in their learning.
The penguin activity at the back is sure to be a hit—it’s creative, hands-on, and adds a playful touch that children will love. Overall, this book makes extra practice enjoyable rather than tedious. Highly recommended!
