Customer Reviews
The layout is clean, the progression is gentle, and my children have gained confidence as their cursive improves. This has become a sweet addition to our homeschool routine, and I highly recommend it to families who want to teach cursive in a meaningful, Christ-centered way.
I really like how the Scripture selections explore the parables, and are tied together with other activities like mazes, dot to dots, and hidden pictures, leading not only to fine motor skills and penmanship practice, but also openings for meaningful, heart-level conversations. What better words for children to copy and think upon than the living and active Word of God?!
With only three days a week on the schedule, it won’t take long and won’t feel like “just one more thing to check off the list”, especially as the book is set up with more than just Bible verses to copy. They have also included dot-to-dot, test your knowledge, hidden pictures, decode the message and other fun things that make this book more interactive and a fun part of your school day.
I love that this course could be used family style. My 5th grader can copy the passage in cursive, my 2nd grader can trace the passage or do the activity pages, and my pre-k student can color the pictures. All while I read the full parable from my Bible! This resource also provides an organized, scheduled guide to assist me in doing parable unit studies. This really is an excellent cursive practice book for a variety of ages.
Two things to add that may cause me to give a 4.5-star rating instead of 5:
First, I am not a fan of emojis being used on some of the pages as my children in the 3rd-4th grade level (the target grade level) aren’t on devices or really using emojis. I would have preferred the emotional faces of the cartoon kids that are already used throughout the book.
Secondly, although Scripture memorization is mentioned in the Course Overview, I wouldn’t choose many of the copywork verses as memory verses because they are pieces of parable stories. Memorizing these verses individually would make for an odd memory verse. I recommend the manuscript version of Little Scribes for memory work.
Although I wanted to mention these two preferences, they do not prevent me from fully utilizing or recommending this course. I truly hope MasterBooks will create additional copywork books for all the levels, (including adult!) both in manuscript and cursive!
Little sister got the handwriting Little Scribes and my son was begging me if there was one for cursive. Yes, now there is. We got it and started it right away! Not only is he enjoying practicing his cursive skills, but he is able to practice with parables! He even skipped to his favorite parable. He is happy, doing a great job in practicing cursive, and I am a happy mom, seeing my child excited to be in scripture.
Like the Handwriting Little Scribes, every assignment has a scripture to trace and then copy, with an additional activity. Some are coloring pages to go along with the verse(s) they did that day, sometimes focus on the words in the scripture itself, or an application of the scripture.
I recommend Little Scribes so students can continue practicing what they have learned.
My 10 yo enjoyed practicing with the tracing even though she has been writing fluently in cursive for several years. She had previously learned cursive with New American Cursive and then dabbled into Catch on To Cursive and the styles were similar enough that the font in Little Scribes worked well for her.
My 8 yo has had little to no experience with cursive before and has enjoyed tracing as a gentle introduction. We will often reference Catch on to Cursive if she comes to a tricky letter, but overall the tracing part is pretty intuitive and satisfying for her. She is not ready to do the copying section yet so we will probably scatter in some more formal cursive instruction along the way until she is able to write fluently on her own. We use dissappearing ink for the tracing so she can practice as many times as needed.
We love the scripture theme of Jesus's parables as we will be also be reading through some of Christ's teachings together in the coming months .
Each day has an activity to go with the scripture lesson. These activities range from dot to dot, coloring pages, drawing, hidden picture, multiple choice, crosswords, and simple circling worksheets.
I had several of my students try these activities and some were easy enough to appeal to my Kindergartner, while others were too difficult for my 8 yo and yet others were too young for my 10 yo so there is something in there for everyone, but it may be something to let your students pick and choose which activities suit them.
Scripture copywork in general has been hugely beneficial for my students. I have seen their spelling and biblical vocabulary increase which has helped them improve their ability to read and memorize scripture, even if the copywork is not done in the version our family prefers and uses for church and personal memorization.
The page design is very streamlined and uncluttered, making it less overwhelming for young students, and easier on the printer if you choose to use the PDF as we did. We printed in black and white and the tracing font is a bit lighter than we would prefer, much lighter than similar Elementary tracing activities from other MB courses, but it still works.
Aside from the above, Little Scribes is a lovely and needed resource that will further infuse your child's education with scripture and build their familiarity with biblical vocabulary, while helping them gain confidence in their cursive journey.
