What is decisiveness? How does someone show discretion? What does it mean to be flexible or available? When it comes to understanding and developing character traits, biographical stories are a powerful tool.

Powerful not only because they so effectively illustrate virtues but also because your young reader doesn't feel preached at.

These 10 stories are engrossing!

  • Instead of being told, “You should express enthusiasm,” They will read about Pastor John Muhlenberg who influenced hundreds of men to fight in one of the first Virginia militias of the war.
  • Instead of hearing that attentiveness is an attractive virtue, they get consumed with the story of Lydia Darragh who prevented a British victory by carefully listening to British plans and relaying that information to George Washington.
  • Instead of being admonished be more generous, they see how Robert Morris used his financial assets to fund his country during a critical period.

Packed with adventure, danger, and real historical drama, these books keep your students turning pages as they devour tales of kidnappings, daring escapes, battles, and moments of courage.

Ten Key Virtues

In ten biographical sketches, see how a figure from the American Revolution demonstrates a key virtue.

  1. Alertness ~ Peter Francisco
  2. Attentiveness ~ Lydia Darragh
  3. Availability ~ Molly Pitcher
  4. Decisiveness ~ Captain John Paul Jones
  5. Discretion ~ General Nathanael Greene
  6. Enthusiasm ~ Pastor John Muhlenberg
  7. Flexibility ~ General Caesar Rodney
  8. Generosity ~ Robert Morris
  9. Honesty ~ Nathan Hale
  10. Persuasiveness ~ Patrick Henry

Relatable Emotions & Challenges
Each sketch puts readers in the shoes of people or those facing tough situations — fear, loneliness, anger, and triumph. Kids see themselves in these moments, not just as passive learners but as participants in the story.

Unexpected Heroes
Not all the heroes are famous or powerful. Some are teens, outsiders, or people who overcame huge obstacles. This makes the stories feel accessible and inspiring to kids who might not see themselves as perfect role models.

Interactive Questions
Each chapter ends with questions that invite readers to imagine themselves in the story, reflect on choices, and think about what they’d do. This reflection turns reading into a personal adventure, not just a history lesson.

Book Format

While the stories are ordered chronologically, each chapter can stand alone if desired. Each biographical sketch will take approximately 30 minutes to read aloud.

Each chapter is introduced with a definition of the virtue demonstrated and a relevant Bible memory verse. At the close of each story, comprehension questions help check for understanding while application questions foster discussion to bring the virtues into modern life.

Read this volume and the entire four-book series to fall in love with history, find heroes to emulate, and develop godly character.

Building Character Through Inspiring True Stories
Review by Kathleen C
This book was such a wonderful start to our journey through character and history. Each short biography from the American Revolution vividly brings a virtue to life, like honesty, generosity, and decisiveness and ties it to real people in history. It sparked great conversation at our homeschool table, and the definitions and memory verses before each story helped my kids really absorb those traits. I highly recommend for middle-level readers.
Good Supplement Reader
Review by LaceeC
Profiles of Integrity is written for ages 7 and up. I do think it’s a little more difficult and not quite as fun as the What a Character series, so I would say this is for a little older crowd. Though, I appreciate that Master Books is giving us multiple options for readers to go alongside the curriculums. That being said, this volume 1 has six characters that are also in the What a Character series, in various books. Having read both, the information is similar but not the same so I believe readers would benefit from reading both to have a better understanding of each of the repeat characters. This book also focuses more in Character Traits, for example Patrick Henry is persuasive. I appreciate that at the start of the chapter for each character it goes over the character trait to be looking for in the chapter as well as a corresponding Bible Verse. I also like that there are questions for each chapter for discussion.
Characters also in the What a Character series: Patrick Henry, Nathan Hale, Lydia Darragh, John Paul Jones, Peter Francisco, and Nathanael Green.
Great Series
Review by Yulia
Profiles of Integrity series are opening a new side of history for students. It teaches essential character traits of American heroes and lets us see the struggles they had to go through to fight for the independency of the USA. Volume 1 of the series talks about many great traits of these brave heroes: Persuasiveness, Enthusiasm, Flexibility, Decisiveness to name some. The series are well organized and delivered. I like that each chapter starts with a definition and a Bible verse, and ends with a quote and some thoughtful questions.

The book would work great for Middle school students and, most likely, will be more appealing to boys. In my opinion, some traits felt a bit stretched (like honesty, for example). Otherwise, it is a wonderful collection of stories which shows important character traits and help students to see them in action of real heroes. I'd give it 4.5 stars.
A great supplement for America’s Story!
Review by Sara G
I am currently going through America’s Story with my 1st and 3rd grader, so when I saw this set I was so excited! We read about a new person each night and it went wonderfully. They were the perfect length to keep my kiddos attention, a virtue and scripture verse opens each chapter, and we absolutely loved the questions at the end. Since we were reading these before bed I assumed we would skip over the questions, but my kiddos loved to quiz each other and challenge themselves each night. Mom loved all the continued learning! Such. WIN!
Inspired character qualities that will benefit our country today
Review by BuildingontheRock
To expand on a history curriculum focused on the founding of the United States of America, volume 2 of the Profiles of Integrity series focuses in on the lives of two women and eight men who displayed persuasiveness, enthusiasm, flexibility, honesty, generosity, attentiveness, availability, decisiveness, alertness, and discretion in their contributions to the birth of our great nation. May any middle school or high school reader be inspired to practice such characteristics in their own lives for the continued good of their country and the kingdom of God.
Inspiring Read
Review by Samantha
An inspiring read that highlights real people who lived out strong moral character and faith. It encourages readers to value integrity and shows how faithful choices can leave a lasting impact.
Perfect for the Whole Family
Review by Ginger
Marilyn Boyer has hit a homerun with Volume One. Having a few ladies in the mix was a delightful surprise for our daughter. Our boys sat on the edges of their seats each time I read one of the profiles. We frequently reference the character qualities we read about and then find examples in our lives to compare to as we grow in Christ like character. This volume, as well as the others, will stay on our bookshelves even when we are finished with our Home School journey.
Lovely!
Review by Marle
Profiles of Integrity Volume 1 by Marilyn Boyer is a thoughtful and inspiring read. Each chapter opens with a carefully chosen memory verse and a defining word—complete with its meaning—that beautifully frames the life and character of the person being profiled. I especially enjoyed how the stories bring integrity to life in a relatable, memorable way, making the lessons both meaningful and easy to reflect on. A simple yet powerful book that gently encourages growth in character and faith.
