What is thoroughness? How does someone show self-control? What does it mean to be meek, loyal, or compassionate? When it comes to understanding and developing character traits, biographical stories are a powerful tool.

Powerful not only because they so effectively illustrate virtues but also because your young reader doesn't feel preached at.

These 10 stories are engrossing!

  • Instead of being told, "You should be thorough," they will read about Booker T. Washington who cleaned a recitation room so meticulously that it secured his entry into Hampton Institute.
  • Instead of hearing that courage is an attractive virtue, they get consumed with the story of Colonel Aleksandr Groten who defied a direct order and exposed himself to enemy fire to save his men from certain death in a swamp.
  • Instead of being admonished to be more compassionate, they see how during the Russian Revolution Gregory Burmistr gave his last pair of felt boots to a young girl suffering from the cold, despite being poor himself.

Packed with adventure, danger, and real historical drama, these books keep your students turning pages as they devour tales of daring escapes, life-threatening risks, wartime heroism, and sacrificial acts of kindness.

In ten biographical sketches, see how a figure from the late 1800s through World War I demonstrates a key virtue.

  1. Thoroughness ~ Booker T. Washington
  2. Contentment ~ Horatio Spafford
  3. Hospitality ~ Kate Gibson
  4. Self-Control ~ Kate Shelley
  5. Meekness ~ George Washington Carver
  6. Joyfulness ~ Lieutenant Armand Pinsard
  7. Courage ~ Colonel Aleksandr Groten
  8. Loyalty ~ Darya Efimova
  9. Obedience ~ Sergeant Alvin C. York
  10. Compassion ~ Gregory Burmistr

Relatable Emotions & Challenges: Each sketch puts readers in the shoes of people facing tough situations — death, imprisonment, poverty, discrimination, and triumph. Kids see themselves in these moments, not just as passive learners but as participants in the story.

Unexpected Heroes: Not all the heroes are famous or powerful. Some are teens, outsiders, or people who overcame huge obstacles. This makes the stories feel accessible and inspiring to kids who might not see themselves as perfect role models.

Interactive Questions: Each chapter ends with questions that invite readers to imagine themselves in the story, reflect on choices, and think about what they'd do. This reflection turns reading into a personal adventure, not just a history lesson.

Book Format

While the stories are ordered chronologically, each chapter can stand alone if desired. Each biographical sketch will take approximately 30 minutes to read aloud.

Each chapter is introduced with a definition of the virtue demonstrated and a relevant Bible memory verse. At the close of each story, comprehension questions help check for understanding while application questions foster discussion to bring the virtues into modern life.

Read this volume and the entire four-book series to fall in love with history, find heroes to emulate, and develop godly character.

Helpful history supplement
Review by Stephanie
Profiles of Integrity Vol. 3 contains 10 stories of men and women from the years 1872-1919, covering the time of Reconstruction to World War I. Each story focuses on a character trait such as contentment, hospitality, courage, etc. The audiobook version of these books is great because most of the stories are less than 10 minutes long (a few are longer) and it is easy to listen to one story as we run errands. I like that we can listen to a story from the same period of history that we are studying, but also can focus on building character. The Principles of Integrity series is a helpful history supplement!
Real Heroes Who Lived Out Their Faith
Review by Kathleen C
The audio version of Profiles of Integrity Volume 3 has been a really strong addition to our homeschool, especially for my older kids. Just like the book, it covers inspiring and sometimes intense narratives from the late 1800s through World War I, and hearing them read aloud made the stories feel even more vivid and impactful.
My older students especially connected with the examples of bravery and sacrifice, and the character traits like courage, compassion, and self-control came through clearly in each account. The narration helped hold their attention, even with some of the heavier historical content, and made it easy to keep moving through the material consistently.

Engaging and Rich in Content
Review by Santina
Profiles of Integrity Volume three covers the years 1872-1919 in chronological order. The stories begin with the definition of a virtue (thoroughness, contentment, hospitality, self-control, meekness, joyfulness, courage, loyalty, obedience, compassion) and ends with thoughtful questions to promote family discussion. This would be great for car rides and a method to teach children virtues in story form. Will Stauff is very engaging and the stories are rich in content!
Great as an audiobook option!
Review by Becky V.
We have really enjoyed listening to Profiles of Integrity, Vol. 3 as an audiobook. This format works so well for us, and it makes it very easy to fit into our day. Especially when we are on the go!

It covers the years 1872 to 1919 through ten short stories, highlighting figures like Booker T. Washington, George Washington Carver, and others from the time during the late 1800s through World War I. What I like most is the focus on character. Each story begins by defining the specific character trait and includes a related memory verse, which gives it a clear purpose beyond just telling history. It is definitely geared more toward the middle school age level and up.

The narration is very straightforward. It feels more like someone just reading to you versus a personal story-driven performance. It may not pull you emotionally, but it keeps things clear and easy to follow. The narrator’s voice was very easy to understand.

At the end of each story, there are questions included in the audio, which helps with reflection and makes it more than just passive listening. Be ready to hit pause quickly to discuss each question with your kids!

Overall, it is a meaningful and easy way to add both history and character study with a biblical perspective into your routine, especially if you enjoy audiobooks and want something simple to use.
Great Audio Series
Review by Rachel
This entire series is such a great addition to your history studies. I also think these could be enjoyed on their own. I love how each of these volumes include both well known and lesser known people. I also like the focus on the different character trait that each individual is displaying. I appreciate the audio book aspect because its is especially helpful in our home with a struggling reader. It allows him to use, experience and enjoy books on his age level even if he can’t fully read it on level yet. There are lots of students and families alike that will enjoy and benefit from each volume of this series!
Inspiring Stories
Review by Dustie
This book series is great! My junior high daughter is enjoying these audio books. It has given her an opportunity to listen while she crafts. She particularly enjoyed that each story highlighted a specific godly character trait that made her think deeper about what it means to demonstrate each trait. She also liked that she was familiar with some of the individuals, but others were new to her. The inspiring stories of brave people throughout history, who were willing to stand up for others, protect others, and serve the LORD regardless of their safety are those that need to be read by every generation.
As a parent, I appreciate that I can give her clean, character-building books to read (or listen to, in this case). I love that these are available as audio books, as they provide an option for listening while being creative. The definition of each trait, as well as a scripture reference are included at the beginning of each section, which I think is a worthy addition. The questions on each section are great to ensure comprehension of the material.
I recommend this series as a compliment to World’s Story. It reinforces that the stories of individual people are important in history.
