Customer Reviews
We appreciated how this volume balances historical context with personal reflection, allowing students to connect with the individuals on a deeper level. The clear, concise chapters made it easy to fit into busy homeschool days.
This volume is especially helpful for encouraging discussions about character, obedience, and trusting God even when the outcome is uncertain.
Each chapter began by highlighting a character quality exemplified by the individual and a related Bible verse followed by a specific story from their life. These audiobooks are very quick and compact biographies that share a specific story from the individual’s life and then including their main life achievements and how they impacted America. The end of chapter questions include short answer questions about the story but also more thought provoking questions about the highlighted character quality.
This volume of stories contains vividly written examples of tremendous bravery and sacrifice amid some very difficult times of war and are full of meat to ponder, although the narration could use more expression. As a Mom, I was especially challenged by the story of Martha Washington in this book and how she put aside her own comfort and grief to invest in the lives of others who were suffering. I wish that when I was a teen, I would have had stories like this to build a picture of marriage and family during the hard times as most of what I read at that age was fluffy and idyllic. The account of of Rev. James Caldwell, pictured with the stack of books on the front was also a challenge as he continued to fight and focus on the big picture of freedom, even when it meant sacrificing precious books in the aftermath of losing his wife in a brutal killing.
As you can see from the above, many of these accounts contain heavy topics related to war so please use caution when listening if you have younger students around.
With discussion questions and character applications, these are great additions to your library.
The narration is well done and perfect for use at home or in the car. They’re short enough that they could work well if you only have a short drive to sports practice, Wednesday night Bible study or a trip to the store etc.
