More Information
When your child's imagination turns every unexpected sound into something scary, they need more than platitudes about not worrying; they need biblical truth that teaches them to pray instead of panic.
Sam Clam and the Big Woosh
The Clam Before the Storm addresses the spectrum of uncertainty-inspired fear, from worry all the way to catastrophic thinking.
Happy Sam Clam feels a big woosh behind him and immediately imagines worst case scenario, upsetting his ocean pals with dire warnings of a coming storm. His spiraling continues, getting the entire aquatic community in a tizzy until the elder member Myrtle Sea Turtle provides the perspective the group needs: God is in control and knows your fears. Instead of being afraid, pray.
As it turns out, the whoosh was the helpful scuba man cleaning the glass of their tank, nothing truly frightening. The characters learn that what feels scary can sometimes even be something positive.
Scriptures and Wisdom in this Title
- The key bible passage for The Clam Before the Storm is Philippians 4:6–7 (NLT).
- The wisdom nugget comes from the centenarian Myrtle Sea Turtle, “Storms happen, but storms also go away. They don’t stay forever.”
This book offers a gentle way to discuss fear and faith with young children, helping them understand that even when things seem uncertain, they can find peace through prayer and trust in God.

Customer Reviews
The engaging illustrations and simple storyline make it a great read-aloud for younger children, while the biblical message opens the door for meaningful family discussions about fear, faith, and trusting God. It’s a sweet addition to our homeschool library and a story my children enjoyed revisiting.
navigate daily tasks that may seem new or frightening. This is the kind of read aloud
that can grow with your child throughout their development. You can identify the
animals and practice alliteration and rhyming in the very early years. As your
child/children reach preschool and early elementary years, you can have conversations
about the story and apply it to scripture. This is another keeper from Master Books.
I read this book to my three children and invited them to share their thoughts:
My 10-year-old son enjoyed it but said it became a bit repetitive with Sam Clam telling all his friends about the “whoosh” and the coming storm. However, he also said, “It’s a great way to teach biblical truth to younger kids,” and he appreciated the Scripture at the end.
My 7-year-old daughter was sad when it ended because she wished the story had been longer. At first, she didn’t seem very excited about it, but the next day when I asked her about the book, she emphatically asked me to read it again!
My almost 5-year-old daughter loved the entire experience and giggled along the way. She enjoyed being introduced to each of Sam’s friends and found it amusing when Sam kept warning them about the coming storm. She seemed to understand the wisdom from Myrtle the Turtle and eagerly asked for me to reread the story.
Overall, I appreciate the message this book conveys. It takes a common thought pattern that children wrestle with and gently redirects it toward biblical truth. While avid readers who are used to chapter books with rich vocabulary may find this book to be somewhat simple, toddlers and preschoolers will likely enjoy it.
I would recommend this book for toddlers through second or third grade, and I look forward to reading future adventures with the Aquarium Pals.
We enjoyed seeing how the book practically applied Philippians 4: 6-7, illustrating the importance of coming to God with all of our anxieties. It also shows how our fears can spread misinformation to those around us if we are not careful.
Toddlers and early readers alike will appreciate the familiar repeated phrases throughout the story. This would be a great story to practice the team reading approach encouraged throughout the early elementary Master Books language arts program.
Although this book is aimed more at the 4-8 age range, the lessons in this simple story are timeless and would make great topics for family discussion.
