Overview

For Grade Level 9-12

It seems that a new and more terrible disease is touted on the news almost daily. The spread of these scary diseases from avian flu to SARS to AIDS is a cause for concern and leads to many questions, which professor Alan Gillen sheds light on in this revealing and detailed book. He shows how these constantly mutating diseases are proof for devolution rather than evolution and how all of these germs fit into a biblical world view. Dr. Gillen shows how germs are symptomatic of the literal Fall and Curse of creation as a result of man's sin, and the hope we have in the coming of Jesus Christ.

As the world waits in fear, the CDC and world health organizations race to minimize the current pandemic — a looming threat that has forced international, federal, and local governments to deal with COVID19 and other future epidemics, and the widespread death and devastation which would follow. Will the world find the answers in time? Or will we see a deadly threat ravage populations as others have before in 1918 with influenza, in the late 18th century with yellow fever, or the horrific “black death” or bubonic plague in 1347 AD?

Are these [viruses] examples of evolution? ...Did God make microbes by mistake? Are they accidents of evolution, out of the primordial soup? These timely questions are examined throughout this book. -from chapter 1

It seems that a new and more terrible disease is touted on the news almost daily. The spread of these scary diseases from avian flu to SARS to AIDS is a cause for concern and leads to questions, such as:

  • Where did all these germs come from?
  • How do they fit into a biblical world view?
  • What kind of function did these microbes have before the Fall?
  • Does antibiotic resistance in bacteria prove evolution?
  • How can something so small have such a huge, deadly impact on the world around us?

Professor Alan Gillen sheds light on these and many other questions in this revealing and detailed book.

Very Informative
Review by Lexie
Days 45-90 in the pre-med course are spent in the book the Genesis of Germs. It was very interesting to learn about microorganisms from a Biblical perspective. There were times when my daughter found this text hard to follow, but she was much more informed on viruses, bacteria, etc. after going through this book.
Very In-depth!
Review by Becky V.
The Genesis of Germs has so much good information in it - and I mean a lot of it! It approaches the subject of germs with a biblical worldview. It is definitely a very in-depth microbiology book, but one that helps you understand microbes and the origin of infectious diseases with a biblical perspective. It is definitely thorough in its content and highly informative. An excellent resource for any student interested in a career in the healthcare field.
Love this!

There's lots of good information in here. We're glad to add it to our library. I wish that the photos were in color, but the content is great.
Interesting book

Like "Body by design", this is also a very interesting book by Alan L. Gillen. Lots of fascinating facts that support creation. The format of this book makes it a little difficult to read if your child is overwhelmed by a lot of words on the page, and more pictures in color would be nice, as well. But for the price, this is a very informative book, and I would recommend it.
This book brought us to Masterbooks
Review by Christi
My son was looking at some items with me online, trying to find some interest-led learning...We actually bought this book used, and didn't know that Masterbooks was a thing. So then after we got the book and found out that it was actually part of a bigger curriculum, we HAD to look further. WOW. This year we are exclusively Masterbooks, and love it!!!!

About this book itself: It is a lot of information, but highly engaging for those that enjoy science. I would even say those that don't, will have more of a fondness for it because of the perspective presented in the book. I love that my son can see a basis for both God and science as well as the discussions that we have had because of this book. I ended up getting everything needed for the Advanced Pre-Med pack, which my son started at the younger than recommended age due to his interests. I will say that although the content is exceptional and highly informative, I did have to scale things down to make it more easy for him to retain at his age. For the recommended age, this is PERFECT as is! I believe the Advanced Pre-Med pack would also count as a Biology credit, too.
Thorough look at microbiology from Christian worldview
Review by Julia
I am amazed at the depth of the microbiology in this text. It is however accessible for high schoolers to study and engage with. The book teaches science thoroughly while interjecting Christian thought to help explain and refute ideas of evolution. There are biographical sketches of scientists throughout the book that add to the teachings. I will be reading this right along with my son!
