Great book, but some cautionary comments
Review by Marie
Our family is enjoying reading this book and there are some really great connections to Scripture. The author is "himself"-- there is some bantering back and forth with him and the guys that the kids think is hilarious. It sometimes borders on rude, but anyone who has spent a lot of time in the outdoors recognizes that this sort of joking and teasing can actually ease tension. As a caution, he does "go out for a beer" occasionally and at one point is talking about the grip of sin and really down-plays over drinking and up-plays over eating as sin. I don't want to be too picky, but his illustration compared drinking a "6th beer" to eating another serving of ice cream-- and then really talked about self-control with the focus on how to resist eating ice cream. The example wasn't bad in itself, but the take-way for impressionable minds wasn't the best.... really SIX beers like another serving of ice cream???!!! Honestly, it would have been better if he had used a more Biblically clear example of sin, like lying. We aren't all the way done with the book, but I wanted to mention this content. I know every family varies, and I would have liked to have a heads-up. I DO appreciate his relationship with the Lord, and how he avoided idol worship on Mt Everest. There were MANY valuable points and he is an engaging writer.
