Content is fantastic, AI photos are HORRIFIC
Review by AI Is NO
If the information weren't so amazing, this would be a 1 or no star review. The AI generated photos are just awful. They are honestly scary and just look cheap. NOT the quality we are used to from MasterBooks, I'm kicking myself for not reading these reviews before dropping all the money we did on this set.....so very disappointed. The quality of the books themselves also feel really cheap, again not what we are used to from MB. VERY thin and flimsy. But the bigger issue is for sure the terrible AI. Don't waste your money....
Not a fan of AI images
Review by Charlotteak
I only have part of the box set. I purchased to use along with America's Story next school year. I was disappointed to see all the AI images. I love the other Masterbooks resources and will continue to use them. I'm not sure if I'll buy the rest of these books though.
We all adore these!
Review by HK
This book, and the whole series, has been absolutely amazing! Just a tiny snippet on the life of each animal or person. But it's a wonderful overview for all ages & an excellent jumping off point if you want to delve deeper into someone specifically. Perfect addition to our history/read aloud time. My 8 & 11 year old boys just grab them off the shelf and read them whenever they want.
As far as the illustrations, I think they are clear & lovely & not distracting from the words whatsoever. We are so, so pleased to have this set on our book shelf!
Wonderful Set of Historical Stories
Review by Dawn P
We love these stories! There is so much important historical information included, but they are written in such a way as to feel like an engaging story and not just a "dry and boring" textbook. Each story is only a few pages, so its very easy to read in one sitting. They can be used as read alouds or independent reading. You can start at the beginning and just work your way through, or skip around to the person or story that pertains best to whatever you are studying.
I enjoy reading them to accompany our history studies, but my boys also like to just sit down and read them during their free reading time.

In addition to the stories there are some great vocabulary words that are explained in the sidebars.
Disappointed in AI Photos
Review by Sam
Like others, I love the written content of this series, but I'm SO disappointed that Masterbooks didn't choose to pay an illustrator for these books. It would be so. much. richer. of a series, if they had. And also like others, if I had realized these were AI illustrated, I probably wouldn't have purchased them to begin with. This makes me sad, because my kids (and I) and have been getting a lot out of the rich stories, but I definitely avoid using or supporting AI content in our school and personal lives, and I really hope Masterbooks reads these reviews and doesn't keep going in this direction, or it will be hard to continue supporting them. I would love it if they would correct course and republish these stories with an actual illustrator, and offer them at a discount to those of us who felt cheated by the AI content.
Engaging Student Readers
Review by Sunny
My son is reading the What a Character series alongside LLFLE, and he is really enjoying these books! We have both learned a lot about these historical figures, but the stories are presented in a way that is engaging and fun rather than dry.

I especially appreciate the vocabulary and glossary sections that introduce new or unfamiliar words, as well as the way each chapter begins by telling when and where the person lived. This makes it easy to connect what we are reading with our history studies, timelines, and mapping activities as well.

These books can be used in so many ways, including language arts, history, family read-aloud time, research, or independent reading. The colorful layout makes them appealing for students who already enjoy reading but also for those who may need a little extra encouragement.
Fantastic!
Review by Samantha
An absolute treasure for families who love bringing history to life. Each book introduces readers to remarkable men and women whose courage, faith, and perseverance shaped the world. The stories are engaging, inspiring, and perfectly written to capture a child’s attention while teaching meaningful character lessons. It beautifully combines history with virtue, showing students that ordinary people can live extraordinary lives when they follow truth and conviction. This set is a wonderful way to spark curiosity about the past while encouraging strong character in the next generation.
Sad….
Review by Sabrina
While the writing and information might be wonderful. I couldn’t get over the AI used to create the pictures. Something we are trying to avoid in our daily and school life. Had I known I wouldn’t have purchased. Going to the giveaway pile.
AI Slop
Review by Sarah
What a complete disappointment. Ignoring the whole moral controversy of AI stealing peoples hard work and not paying actual artists, they didn’t even get someone who could generate good AI pictures. I’m sorry, but whatever good the writing does is overshadowed by the absolutely horrific pictures. Some books are absolutely worse than others. There’s no unification in the art throughout an entire book, much less the series as a whole. It’s hard to find a single picture that does not have a single thing wrong with it. There are so many typical AI generated mistakes that are so easy to see, I could write a book! These books were clearly nowhere near being ready to publish when they were. Buyer beware.
Kids of ALL ages love these!
