Workbook can be frustrating
Review by AJO
This is my second review. I can't find any way to revise my first one so I am writing a second. This is regarding the workbook. When I wrote my first review, I had not spent much time looking at the workbook questions. But I had been hearing rumors that some answers are hard to find, so I spent time trying to find answers for the first couple of chapters. About half of the questions are fairly easy to find (i.e. clearly in the text). Other questions, however, require "reading between the lines". Some of those are easier than others, but I found myself looking at the answer key much more than should be necessary. For example, in Chapter 2 lesson 2, one True/False statement says, "Experts believe that the Code if Hammurabi is not as old as once thought". However, the answer is far from clear. In fact, the text doesn't say anything at all about what the experts think, so there is really no way of knowing the answer without extra research. Are students supposed to assume that because the text says nothing that the answer must be false? The answer is false according to the answer key, but the fact that it can't be either found in or convincingly deduced from the text is very frustrating. Maybe the answer is in the optional supplemetary videos? If so, that is a poor design since the videos are supposed to be optional. I am disappointed because I still really like the textbook, but the jury is still out now on whether we will use this course or not.
Interesting
Review by World History
My daughter chose to do this for 9th grade. She worked through it independently for the most part and it seemed to be interesting to her.
Good overview
Review by AJO
I recently purchased this text and have been flipping through it. It is a good overview of world history with plenty of colored illustrations. It does not go very much in depth, but let's face it: if you want an in-depth world history, you will need several volumes and multiple years to get through it. If you just want an overview that you can complete in one year, this is a solid option. The reading lessons are fairly brief, so great for students who don't like to read much or just aren't that into history. I think the author did a fine job of including the major aspects and people in world history and I think the reading level is appropriate for high school. Once in a while there are text boxes with quotes from different people and these can be a little hard to understand, but that is to be expected with historical writings. Note that I am only reviewing the textbook, not the So Noted book. The workbook appears to be fairly simple to complete.

I have read many reviews for both this text and the author's American History text. It seems that many have been disappointed at the American History book because there are a a handful of pages where the text seems to take a modern social justice slant (not anything that a discussion with your child can't handle). I just want to say that I have seen none of that in this World History Text. Most of the text is factual narration. Occasionally, the author interjects the narrative with a Christian worldview note (really only a handful of times in the entire book), and it is always consistent with Scripture.
Highly Recommend!
Review by Heather
My 10th grader is doing Stobaugh’s World History (MB) and I am continually impressed with how the course points to God and utilizes critical thinking. I’ve seen such growth in my student and he also really enjoys the course. It’s also been a bonus that as our church is going through the book of Genesis, Henry Morris’ commentary is repeatedly quoted!
Solid history course
Review by Marissa
My 10th grader is taking this course right now, she is a little more than half way done. She thinks the course is a little dry, but she has learned a lot. She especially enjoyed learning about the middle ages. She said the Bible studies are very good and she's really enjoyed those. She would recommend this course.
Horrible
Review by Haley
This curriculum is truly horrible. I can't imagine that the parents giving it five star reviews are actually reading the lessons or involved in teaching it at all. I teach this with my son every day and we are on chapter 15. The history taught is such an extremely scant overview with zero depth or detail, while feeling really disjointed and out of order, that I feel like nearly nothing has been learned. The language used seems to have been written with the sole purpose of being difficult to comprehend. The worksheets are ridiculously difficult and over half the answers are not even in the reading or the extra videos I purchased. Or the questions have been purposely worded in a way to trick the student. History is my son's favorite subject and something I love as well. This curriculum has sucked all the joy and wonder out of it. I wish I had gone with a different curriculum and hadn't wasted so much money and time on this. We usually adore MasterBooks, but this just isn't it.
God's World History
Review by Lori
I love the fact that this history book starts out at the beginning of the world. I mean, it really is WORLD HISTORY, isn't it? Showing all the Biblical history in this course was amazing, and I'm truly hoping that my daughter will take this with her all her life. Thank you for showing all of the historical facts and integrating God with it.
Incomplete
Review by A Gomez
While lessons are engaging, the lessons are not enough to give students the material required to answer the questions. The curriculum writer mentions in a video that she used other material to compose this curriculum. If this is indeed the case, then it should be listed added or at least suggested reading material at the end of every chapter so that the student knows where to look and research. I am not a fan of my student feeling the need to google for answers because she doesn’t have what she needs. The teacher guide is not a guide at all. It has only the semester plan for assignments and the worksheets and answer key. I thought that perhaps the video series might be the answer, but it is listed as supplemental, not required, and doesn’t appear to have all that’s needed to answer the questions. I’m now torn because my daughters have both been disheartened and absolutely delayed due to their frustration and lack of independence to complete their assignments. As a working homeschool mama with very capable teens, this is not the right fit for our family at all, and very much requires my direct involvement in helping to find vetted material they can search for answers - and if it is based on more current events, it makes it even more difficult to find. Critical thinking questions are great at times, but material is lacking to equip them to answer them. Bought this along with American History, and now I’m regretting the advance purchases.
Very dry
Review by Echo
This was very dry, and what was taught on was not very in depth; my kids did not enjoy it. Teacher guide did not go well with it either.
Wonderful High School World History Books
Review by Kathleen C
Student Book
This is a great high school-level World History course. My son and I both liked the way it is written. Every lesson is engaging and thought-provoking. I especially like the start of each chapter. You are given a chapter overview and a list of things the reader should be able to discuss, analyze & reflect on by the end of the chapter. I also like the highlighted boxes which pull out key vocabulary or important facts. The use of original book excerpts, speeches, passages, and quotes was a great addition. There are beautiful colorful pictures in this book—they help to bring each topic to life. More than anything, I feel that this course has prepared my son to be able to understand and comfortably discuss the history of our world. *This book uses the same format as the American History student book which was nice to see.
