Writing Strands Advanced 1 will help your junior high/high school student practice writing reports, short stories, essays, and other forms of writing and learn about literary devices, including imagery, symbolism, and rhetorical language.
Developed to give students advanced skills, such as recognizing and using persuasive language, writing reports, and developing character in creative pieces.
Students will learn the process of giving others their thoughts in written form through three areas: creative, research and reports, and explanatory. Every exercise will guide them in the development of communication skills they need.
Topics addressed in this one-year course include:
Recognizing the three points of view writers use
Describing what has been seen over a period of days and writing a scientific report
Understanding the organization of an explanatory exposition
Developing effective characters and conflict in creative writing
Identifying common literary devices in the Bible
Understanding why literary devices are used
A suggested schedule is provided, as well as worksheets that are three-hole punched and perforated, and the addition of a reading and literature component helps students look more deeply into the Bible and other books they select.
Recommended for: Grades 7-10 / 1 Year / 1 English credit

Teen loved it
Review byJessica
We loved this curriculum. My son was falling behind on his writing skills and his old curriculum was far too laborious. We have used this series for a couple years now and he doesn't complain about these assignments. I have seen huge growth in his writing as well.

Great writing curriculum!

I really love the writing aspect of Writing Strands, but I did not like the one week of writing, one week of reading set up. The writing instruction was perfect for my reluctant writers and they really progressed well in that with Writing Strands.

Great for a reluctant writer
Review byAngela
This gives bite-size assignments that are not too overwhelming. This year the focus is on research and writing more formal papers. This is a good beginning for someone.

Encourages writing
Review byMary
This is a fantastic course for even the reluctant writer as it has engaging and imaginative writing assignments, but also is very thorough walking the student step by step through the daily tasks. Highly Recommend for high school.

Awesome

We love the approach. My daughter specifically likes the student review page at the end of the week. It helps her focus on what she did really well that week and find an area that she still needs to work on.

We didn't finish it
Review byLeigh
I bought Writing Strands Advanced 1 for my Freshman daughter. She didn't much like it. I wan't impressed either. It didn't contain much instruction and I didn't find the questions at the end of each unit helpful. For example, one of the questions would ask about what the best sentence you wrote in the last week was. That seems like busy work. I like to see more instruction to help develop thoughts geared toward well thought out writing.

Love this!
Review byJulie
My daughter has been writing stories and books since she learned how to write so I wasn't sure how she would like this course. She loves it! We have done a variety of language arts programs over the years and this one has been her absolute favorite! She loves the writing assignments and has really enjoyed the reading assignments since we decided to use a variety of different kinds of books for those and she's getting to read things she enjoys but probably wouldn't have normally picked out to read.

Love the format in this book. I have a reluctant writing and he is not overwhelmed by this book. There are short lessons and building on these. So the student will be progressing more and more without even realizing it!
